Do you think you have good taste in music?

Do you think you have good taste in music? Are you a music snob?

Personally, I like to think I can differentiate between well made, detailed, artistically sound music with a certain "timeless" quality and disposable, single-minded, cheap music. Whether or not I really can is another matter. However, what I listen to and enjoy does not neccessarily follow my tastes on what is "good" and "artistically sound".

For example, I love Alphazone's work, but in reality it's probably horrible disposable crap with very little true musical value or subtlety. Same goes for a lot of commercial house and commercial trance I enjoy.

So, do you make a distinction between music you like and consider "good", and music you like and consider "bad"?

I'm not neccessarily talking about cheesy "guilty pleasures" here either; a completely cheese-free hard trance or plodding minimal techno track might be fun for you to listen to, but they might also be formulaic, undetailed and poorly produced in general. Deadmau5 would be a good example here; his music isn't really cheesy but it's artistically lazy.

I think this is an interesting topic because most people make this disctinction with movies (i.e liking crappy Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell movies despite knowing they're tripe), and yet a lot of people seem to ignore this idea when it comes to music.

Honestly I'm more worried that in ten years I'll find everything I like now unbearable to have any hubris about possessing "good taste".

Posted by nefardec on Apr-24-2009 03:22:

my music taste changes a lot

i don't really think about it any other way. i know what i like at a given time

Posted by KiNeTiC ENeRgY on Apr-24-2009 03:26:

All music has it's time and place. Who cares what I think in 10 years, as long as I find pleasure in it now. Music is very subjective, and tastes change rapidly.

Posted by wotyzoid on Apr-24-2009 03:31:

I think I have several different musical psyches. That's why I can never dedicate myself to one selective range of genres (which I think is stupid anyway). Sometimes I wonder if what I'm listening to at the moment is shit, but I like what I like.

Posted by Subtle on Apr-24-2009 03:42:

I have my own taste, not someone else`s.

Its pretty clear to me though, that the music i like will be percepted as bad to the majority of people.

Posted by Light The Fuse on Apr-24-2009 04:05:

i suppose mine is 'experienced' taste compared to someone who may not have been listening to music as intently as i have over the last decade or so.

- and what wotyzoid said is pretty spot on for me as well

Yes that's a crazy thought. Thinking that I'll have some old harddrive full of edm and only wishing I could figure out how I used to dedicate so much time and get so much enjoyment out of something that simply doesn't do it for me anymore.

Anyways it doesn't seem like anyone has directly answered the original question.

So, do you make a distinction between music you like and consider "good", and music you like and consider "bad"?

Well I've just tried answering this question and deleted what indecisive words I wrote. What I will say is, why would I like music that I consider bad?

Posted by wotyzoid on Apr-24-2009 05:14:

Yes, I look at my taste in music to be somewhat superior to the avarage radio listener simply because I invest so much more time and effort into it.

Posted by cmay119 on Apr-24-2009 06:02:

Is there anyone out there that honestly believes their own taste in music is 'bad'?

EDIT: Working without hindsight, I doubt anyone will actually come in here and say what they choose to listen to at the given moment is bad, and they feel that they have horrible taste.

You'll always hear the past tense version: "I had horrible taste in music..."

There are always guilty pleasures I consider as "bad" even when listening to them but I usually mainly like them because they're too dumb for me to hate.

Other than that, I've always been pretty selective in the music I listen to. One could even call it being somewhat of a musical snob, I guess. I cannot really recall anything I would had listened to in the past that I'd now consider "bad".

I agree with what you're saying but there is definately some music that I used to listen to that I don't anymore which I'll claim was bad taste, and some that was good taste that I'm simply not interested in anymore.

Sometimes I really like God awful music. I just find humor in a lot of things that most people don't.

Posted by Chimney on Apr-24-2009 16:52:

Just like Mr.Mystery said there are certain types of music one likes but can't really catalogue into so called "good music".

I'd rate my own music taste as ok.

I'd rate my music tastes as my own.

Posted by woscar on Apr-24-2009 17:31:

The people I know that are not into EDM think my taste is shit. Then again, their idea of a good "trance song" is "Alex Gaudino - Destination Unknown".

And I have another friend who is into EDM that has told me that he finds my mixes to be weird and sometimes "gay" sounding. Then again, he listens to ASOT compilations in his car all the time.

Just pointing out some irony, that's all

I like it all honestly. I listen to Top 40, Hip Hop, Rock, and obviously Dance and Trance.
It's sometimes fun to find those super cheesy records, perplexed and amazed how people actually came up with these "tunes":

I would like to think i have good taste, but I really suppose it depends whose perspective you see it from. People seem to enjoy the sets I put out (even though they tend to represent only a fraction of the type of electronic music that i do i enjoy), and at the end of the day all that matters to me is that i enjoy listening to it now. Life is too short to worry about 10 years from now, but chances are I will be listening to something totally different than today if i look at my past appreciation of musical styles.

That being said, I do not think that anyone who listens exclusively to electronic music can be said to have great taste. A wine lover is never a connaisseur if he only drinks merlot from one part of the world. To me to appreciate good music is being able to appreciate it in its many forms.

Well said.

Fair point.

More what I was trying to say though, is let's say I listened religiously to happy-hardcore. That's it. That's all I like. If someone came up to me and asked me if I had horrible taste in music, my answer would still be 'no'. Even though from an outside perspective this would more than likely be incorrect answer.

My point was really going on, people like what they like. As long as someone isn't told what to like, they're always going to have a positive interpretation of what hits their ear right.

Yeah, a situation quite similar to this one:

The only taste I would call bad is not having one of your own, i.e. liking what people/media/whatever say you should like.

That, and Eurodance.

I just knew someone would say that. But as I've explained earlier, I consider Eurodance, as the abandonment of sophistication, to be the highest level of sophistication in musical taste.
