This made me laugh:

quote:
Israeli official: Swine flu name offensive

JERUSALEM (AP) The outbreak of swine flu should be renamed "Mexican" influenza in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities over pork, said an Israeli health official Monday.

Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman said the reference to pigs is offensive to both religions and "we should call this Mexican flu and not swine flu," he told a news conference at a hospital in central Israel.

Both Judaism and Islam consider pigs unclean and forbid the eating of pork products.

Scientists are unsure where the new swine flu virus originally emerged, though it was identifed first in the United States. They say there is nothing about the virus that makes it "Mexican" and worry such a label would be stigmatizing.

Two Israelis who recently visited Mexico have been hospitalized with symptoms of the flu. Health authorities have not yet confirmed whether they actually have the virus.

The current strain of swine flu is thought to have originated in Mexico where more than 100 people have been killed by the disease so far.

Laboratories in the U.S. and Canada have confirmed that of the samples tested so far, the swine flu virus in Mexico and U.S. appear to be the same.

Oh poor Jews and Muslims. Instead of offending them, lets offend an entire nation, that had nothing to do with the source of the flu. I say we coin something called 'west-bank syndrome', where you loose all ability to form logic.

Q21. I have plans to travel to Mexico (or the Southern United States). Should I cancel my trip?

No travel restrictions have been issued, but the Public Health Agency of Canada has issued some travel advice.

When travelling to affected areas, do the same things you would normally do to protect yourself and others during normal flu season. Wash your hands, cover coughs and sneezes, stay in if you are sick and get an annual influenza immunization (flu shot).

Even though the annual flu shot many not protect against the human swine influenza, there is still seasonal influenza circulating in Mexico and the flu shot will help protect you from contracting the seasonal human flu.

Our workplace has implemented a mandatory work-from-home period for anyone coming back from Mexico. Paid of course.

Apparently we took some pretty extreme measures during SARS too.

probably not go.

The flu's prime target is 25-45 years of age..

The immune system overreacts to defend itself against the virus which proves to be lethal

I haven't really read up on the Swine Flu. But is it more lethal than SARS? Cause SARS wasn't really lethal unless you had a weak immune system like kids or older people.

none of Nova Scotia cases were even hospitalized

I work at a small shop, we could be completely crippled if someone was infected.

Workers were moved to offsite locations, some worked from home. There was car pooling/rentals to discourage public transit as well.

Posted by Orko on Apr-28-2009 18:24:

Well that is exactly it. As a risk management strategy, you have to see what costs are associated with mitigating that risk, and what costs are associated with taking on that risk. IMO the risk of SARS was very low, but the fear was very high; a lot of organizations ended up wasting a lot of money by taking precautions that were not really needed. Moving people around, and creating inefficiencies probably could have been avoided for SARS. People freaked out over West Nile in a similar fashion, to no real use. I am going to go out in a limb here, and say the same for swine flu, but only time will tell.

but if there are serious illnesses or deaths, and health authorities did nothing, we'd be calling for their heads.

damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I say we defer to the experts and let them do their job instead of second guessing them.

That is a terrible way to live. How often do 'experts' get it wrong? Heads should role in both cases, wasting money, and not doing their job. If we followed this logic, we would end with...wait...our government! Oh god, the nightmares have come true.

Yes, experts have their place, and we should have faith in them, but they should also be held to some sort of performance goals. Systems cannot be run with the 'just in case' mentality.

Remember that in cases like this, a lot of the information does not even come from experts that we pay (government officials/scientists), it comes from the media, who are paid to comment, and not protect.

All I am saying is that you should actively question the information that you are given.

I'd postpone your trip. A friend had some bookings in Mexico this past weekend, the clubs wound up canceling the events.
