Do you smell something burning?

No wait, that's me thinking...

The wife and I are mulling over the idea of holding a long-weekend, daytime-to-early-evening deck party fundraiser at our place for both the DJ school and PivotTechno events. Wondering if enough people are going to be around who'd be into this (we have capacity for 40-50), and whether the Saturday or Sunday would be better. I'm leaning toward Saturday, as I figure it would be a good warm-up to what I know are some major party dates for a lot of people.

All of the DJs who've got back to me have agreed to donate their time if we do this, and the lineup's looking impressive. We have Curtis Maranda, Flim and Pivot residents Andreas Marouchos and yours truly confirmed so far, which will translate to a pretty tasty gamut of sunny afternoon and cool evening Techno, House and Electro. Party will be BYOB and food, but we'll have a bbq on the go and it will be fired up all day.

FYI, our next guest recently threw down a slamming set at Awakenings 2009 New Year's Eve party in Rotterdam and we're 100% sure he'll bring his A-game to Pivot. We'd like to keep our events free, or as close to it as possible and figure this would be a good way to go about it - was going to throw in no cover (which if the Vic weekend bash goes off, we'll be able to keep to $5) at our next party for those who donate at the fundraiser.

TOTA input appreciated - naysayers, keep the sarcasm in your pants.

I'm always up for deck parties.

This is certainly relevant to my interests.

If I am coming to TO for Freedom, I may drop by beforehand.

Andreas is a resident for our production group - Pivot. You might have misread 'Flim' as 'Film' - Flim is a crazy Thai guy who loves life and doesn't get nearly enough play in this city...

LMAO @ "film" vs. "flim", this thread is amazing

Hey, we don't all have big clubs with big budgets and sponsorship to help us along. The Promise guys have been of the "pass the hat" camp since the getgo and no one seems to be complaining, so what's funny about asking the dance music community to back our events in whatever manner they can, especially when we're offering a day of kickass music in return?

Posted by jon jon on May-07-2009 20:27:

so basically it's a fundraiser for your business?

I think my point was that the term "fundraiser" gives the illusion of it being a charity... (which it's obviously not in this case)

I'm familiar with the event listings forum, this thread was started just to put the feelers out and maybe build a little hype.

And no, we aren't a charity, but my wife and I are both fairly low-income and also in school for shiatsu therapy, which as you can imagine is a further drain on our finances. I may be a bit touched in the head for trying to hold events under these circumstances, but the response we've been getting so far keeps me enthusiastic and coming back for more.

Andreas and I started this production company to fill what we saw as an absence in Toronto's dance music scene - there simply aren't that many DJs getting booked to play banging Detroit Techno, local or otherwise. We aren't really concerned with profit at this point, just in holding quality events with the best talent we can get our grubby little hands on. As mentioned, we have a bit of momentum after our first two events, but we need some help to up the ante a little. The DJs who've played for us so far can see that we have a good thing on the go and have been generous enough to play for drinks and transport - next time around, I'd like to see them walk away with a little something in their pockets for their efforts. This is a hard thing to do when we have to rent sound and we're charging minimal or no cover (our first two events were free and we used an absolutely brilliant Dynacord soundsystem which garnered much praise). The deck party seemed like a fun way to help out with this, and the responses in this thread make me very hopeful for Pivot's future!
