Constant Slightly-Left Pan

Let me preface this by saying that I never ever touch the pan knobs (left/right) when producing. All my pan controls are always strictly at the 12 o'clock position (neutral).

However, whenever I listen to my music, especially through headphones, I always get the feeling that the left side is somehow just a bit louder. Am I imagining this? No matter what VSTs or sounds I use, unless I make a special effort to change it, my gut feeling is that the left channel has more volume to it.

I remember reading somewhere (don't remember where) that all music is slightly panned to the left. Have any of you heard anything about that? And indeed, in my sequencer, the volume bars for left/right have similar lengths but the top one (for left) is just a bit stronger.

Check your master volume pan in your sound control panel?

it even happens in my car. The left-hand car speakers shake a bit more, lol... it could be a figment of my imagination, but it bothers me.

Get a hearing test on your right ear.

I get a similar thing. It's just that our right ears aren't as in tune as our left or more likely that the ear canal on the left is a different shape so seems to convey sound easier.

why is that? is that an anatomical feature of humans?

Not sure if it's a common thing though I suspect it might be. Who knows? I've never bothered to actually get the answer

Hmm... I feel that my right side seems to sound louder whenever I use earphones.. Always thought It was the phone's or the earphone's fault..

It's your hearing. I the meters read equal, it's equal. trust your meters and kow your ears and i'ts restrictions

I'm so glad I saw this thread. This happens to me on occassion. Left side for me, in headphones, in studio, in car. VU meters balanced, no panning on master channel. We are all freaks

Probably just rubbish cables/interference/shoddy driver on that side/difference between two ears.

Whats more concerning to me is that the OP never uses any panning sad fase is sad.

i dont touch the panning knobs on my mixer but I use panning what do you mean

Well this is a complete guess, but the left hemisphere of the brain processes speech.

The way the human body works (left side of brain controls right side of body and vice versa) means that chances are you use your right ear more DJs will monitor with it more likely, on the phone even left handed people use their right ear (since the right ear is linked closer to the left side of the brain = speech) in a night club/gig probably cup your right ear to hear people, etc.

So maybe the right ear suffers a slight hearing loss due to this?

Total speculation, but it was based on a slight educated guess. Feel free to rip me to shreds.

this has been happening to me all month.. i thought my left ear was just dying. (also possible)

Ive seen this as well.... in some cases even pulling up a stereo image meter showing much more audio to the right (+1) then center or left.... This typically happens more so with the lower frequencies where im sure there is some phasing issues occuring.... either way all previous comments apply.... does get annoying though.

yep same here.

i can have a sound panned 10 left and then try it 10 right and it'll sound unequal in placement. i usually pan and phase sounds to the left. most of the time panning just doesn't sound right placed on the right.

I don't suffer from this, but when using my headphones + an external monitor to mix, I GREATLY prefer having my headphone on my left ear because I can focus on left ear input more than I can on right ear input which just seems to yield better results when I mix.

As a Registered Nurse, I've never heard or read about any differences, both anatomical or imagined (schizphrenia, etc), in right and left ears.

Given: a car with driver/listener on left side of vehicle plus one stereo signal, broadcast quadraphonically (front and rear speakers).

I submit that phase cancellation is occurring in the middle of the stereo field causing a loss of hearing in the right ear. Where the left ear is concerned it is subject to more sound, emanating from a location further from the center of the stereo field.

you could just have an epic wax build-up in your ear. this happened to me. the sound from my left ear would constantly come in and out ligtly

Or hearing loss, broken speaker, electrical problem (i.e. broken pan potentiometer).
