Maxwell Dub - Rain In April [moody/melodic/mindf*ck/techno]

I started working on this mix about a month ago when Matthias Matthew (better know as Quadlow on TA) asked me to do a mix for his new night, Migrashun. I finished the tracklist fairly quickly, mixed it in one take in ableton, then sent it off. After handing it off, I kept coming back to it to add a tool, rework a section, or experiment with the rain theme by adding different samples and fx. In this sense I guess you could say its a blend of a live mix and a studio mix. What came out as the final product is 20 minutes longer than the original, and has two climaxes. I got this idea while seeing Paco Osuna @ Hed Kandi this past WMC. His set was full of driving, percussive techno then after two hours, he sort of wound things down with a serious drop in energy. The party wasn't over though, Paco just kicked it into afterhours mode from there. I thought this was a pretty cool idea, and so I tried to bring that feeling through in this mix.

I'm not expecting that this mix will be for everyone, and you've certainly got to be in the right mood to listen to it. Regardless, enjoy the tunes and please let me know your thoughts.

nice looking tracklist and i will give it a listen, but i have to admit seeing the visual sucks a lot of the fun out of it to me already. GRRRRRRRRRRR don't encourage them

Techno isn't quite my thing really, but it looks very interesting, I'm going to listen as soon as I finish listening to all these other mixes! Downloading now

Really enjoyed this mix, some really nice melodic techno in here, a lot I have never heard before.

glad to hear it man, cheers n bizeers

getting it. Mainly because there's A Break in the Clouds in it, but also because I don't know any of those other tracks since becoming tired of techno and tech house for the most part.

Looks like it could be good

I listened to it. It was decent, but many of the tracks seemed to be laden with the sounds of house and techno that I've grown tired of. To me it seems that many producers are starting to recycle each other's samples and ideas more and more and much of the stuff in here had this "I've heard this all before" feel to it.

Dunno, just my opinion.

Other than that, it was well-constructed, and A Break in the Clouds was good.

Max I thought this mix was pretty good. Definitely liked that intro that combined the Marc DePulse and the Tokyo Black Star tracks, it worked well.
Also noticed you used Airplay as your third track - funny coincidence since it was the third track on the April mix I recently did. I guess we would
both agree on where that one would fit into a set. As for the rest of the mix, it was good. I don't think the Paulo Olarte track really fit in at that
stage in the mix. It is also a track I used before and I had used it towards the very end. Maybe it's because of that but I feel like it's a winding-down
track more than a warming-up track. Anyway, the rest was pretty sweet. Was definitly feeling the last 30 minutes or so, some nice tripped-out
tech vibes there. Overall good stuff. I guess I should mention that (and this actually goes for 12 Inchaes of Pleasure as well) some of the transitions
felt slightly forced. In that sense, the two tracks didn't necessarily fit harmonically yet you mixed them anyway. I can point you to the specific instances if
you would like. Otherwise though I definitly dig your sets.

I hear ya dude, to be perfectly honest I'm rather bored with techno too, this is sort of my "kiss goodbye" to it for awhile as I've been really into the funkier shit lately. what transitions did you feel were forced? thanks for the comments, I appreciate it.

So just letting you know I listened to this, seemed pretty groovy, and it had me bouncing a few times. I particularly liked 19 minutes, 55 minutes, and 61 minutes. This style just isn't exactly me, I like my EDM a little busier than this

No worries though, the mixing was solid for the most part, and I thought the structure was good for people who like this stuff Thanks for the music!

Posted by DJOverdose on May-15-2009 18:38:

wuhuu that set was awesome! but that Paulo Olarte - Siluetas (Molder Remix) is maybe a better tune for the end or the beginning of a faster set. anyways, for me this is one of the best parts in this set. thanks!
