Does anyone know if a passport is needed for entering canada now by car from the US?

Yes u do need a passport to travel to canada. Starting in June.

i was reading that to but it said if you travel by air a passport is needed.. land or sea.. says valid id and proof of citizenship/birth certificate if your of age 18 or older. so i am little unsure.

The safest thing you can do is to have a passport. But no matter how lax Canada's laws are, you WILL have a problem comimg back to America if you don't have one.

The problem is not getting into Canada, but rather coming back into the US. An italian friend got deported because the US border patrol couldn't understand the fact she had a student visa. It will be easier for you to get back home if you just get a passport.

Thanks everyone..sucks been going to canada since i was like 4 years old to see my cousins and now this bullshit. An ID was always enough but did call customs just now and they said the same thing. its Easy to get in but coming home im basically fucked..lol.. So tomorrow passport it is.. Thanks everyone!!

I go to canada several times a year and, while they *say* u don't need one yet, they will put up a huge stink if u don't. Don't even bother going without one. Going to MTL is a little easier than Toronto (via niagara or b-lo....I 100% would NOT go thru that border without one in EITHER direction!! Doubtful they would even let u thru, they are much more strict at the western border....)

Just got back from Niagara Falls yesterday. Bring a passport cause without it you cant get in.
