Confused Power-hungry Moderators?

I'm puzzled. I ran into Swamper (whom I've met many times) at the Kool Haus on Friday night and learnt it was his birthday Saturday, so I took it upon myself to try and let as many TA's as possible know so they could wish the man a nice day. Now, I know the chill-out is probably the place for this (and I didn't realize there was a thread here for that), but I assumed that just like in Toronto most TA's don't visit much outside of the local scene forum, though I may be wrong. Now, there was a good response in some threads, but in some there was a rather puzzling response. Several threads were abruptly closed by moderators, and LOL I've been even called "AssKisser of the Month" by someone, pretty funny I must admit.

My question is, although it is a moderator's job to bring some order to forums, is it necessary or appropriate to over-do it? Did they have to exercise their "power" and not give people a chance to post if they wanted to? I mean, not all TA's are on forums as frequently as the mods to see the thread elsewhere. HaHa, I was even called rude for not saying "hello" in my post by the France forum mod. What the fuck???

Whatever. I realize none of us want tons of irrelevant posts in the forums, but give me a break. I just thought it would be nice for Swamper, and anyone who knows me in Toronto would know I am no asskisser. Bottomline, I think some mods are in it more for the power than to keep the order, as one thread to thank\congratulate the founder of the site won't create disorder.

What do you guys think?

in my experience the mods have done a pretty good job, the mod's of the individual local forums each have their own idea how the forum should be run and its their job to do that, dont take any offence from it, people from all around the world have different cultures etc and although you posted with good intentions they may not see it that way

Posted by Miss Proximus on Jun-18-2002 14:08:

and most of us are tired of spammers!! every other week there's some lamer spamming the same thread in all the regional forums!! how could we have know that wasn't your intention?

anyhow...if it really was an act of goodness, i would've done it completely different and i would've sent the big boss a bouquet of Swamp Plants

i just don't know what to think of it arctic

i could say: IF those ppl never visit the chill out but only their own regional forum (counts for all forums now), do you think they would care about Swampers b-day?

you and me do...but that doesn't make other ppl do it aswel

You have a point there. I guess other than the Toronto people who actually know him, you're probably right that they wouldn't care, though it seems to be very forum specific.

Regarding spamming, what in the world did you think I was spamming about? Did I sound like I was trying to sell something?

Yes....SWAMPER!!

I thought "posting the same thread in all forums" was also considered spamming If not..my bad...

Anyhow...I think we can work this out altogether can't we

Let's all just kiss and erase that particular memory (k)

OK, forgotten. But really, this thread wasn't so much about what happened in this instance, but more to get views on the way some mods behave. jonsimmonds does have a point and from now on I won't make questionable posts in forums I don't frequent.

Smoking ..umm..something

gawd it's so funny how people get so worked up over "spamming"...wtf ppl need to chill out. not everyone on the forums is a fucking computer geek and they dont realize all the "rules" of TA right away...

In that sense, I too think jon had a point. Mods all have different cultural backgrounds, and what some consider impolite is normal behaviour for others

I also share jon's opinion about the fact that all mods handle things the way theu think they should..even though other ppl may question their decisions every once in a while

Anyhow..I hope this doesn't prevent you from entering the Holland forum again If you're gonna visit your friend in Utrecht again, you can take a look at the sticky thread we've made for foreigners that come to visit Holland

Baai!! (K)

Actually the Holland forum didn't bother me one bit, so as it was all in Dutch and so I had no idea what nasty things people were saying about me.

Anyway, I'll be sure to post when I next head that way Proximus, thanks for the invite.

Oh, and good point Slylee.

As the israeli forum moderator i dont consider it as spamming, i consider it as thanking the man who created this gr8 communite, or some may call it a "second home"...
arcticboy could of just done it in the chill out section, but if he already posted it in all the forums.. then what the heck?

LOL, I can see how amusing that must sound, but I guess you'd have better perspective if you were in Toronto. We have this other forum called "Tribe" that I don't visit but many in the scene do. One moderator on there (also the owner of the magazine, I think) is just ridiculous. He uses any silly excuse to shut down a thread or threaten to do so, sometimes laughable and childish. I've always like TA for being more easy going, at least in our local forum, so I was pretty disappointed to see those kind of responses from some mods on TA. Fairly childish as far as I'm concerned, but then for all I know they are kids.

I'm glad at least DJ Energy thought it was an appropriate thread.

Anyway, I'm done with this issue, I think I've said all I have to say.

Smile

As the tracks section moderator.....i agree with dj energy.

Your efforts are appreciated...

i find too many people are ignorant of whats the do on this forum, infact i find the mods are finding it harder and harder to do there jobs without people moaning about it. is this place crap? no! so zippit!

We made rules in the Holland forum.
And one of them:
Birthday-threads are not allowed, PM a member to congratulate him/her.

You couldn't know cause the rules are in Dutch.
I think we have to make those rules in english to....
