"My god, it's...minimal?!" or "Sand Leaper dances his ass off to Rob Hood"

I had to look inside myself and say 'What do you like, what do you want to hear?' What I've always wanted to hear: the basic stripped down, raw sound. Just drums, basslines and funky grooves and only what's essential. Only what is essential to make people move. I started to look at it as a science, the art of making people move their butts, speaking to their heart, mind and soul. That's the only thing I focussed on [...]

In 2009, "minimal" no longer means "minimalistic". Minimal is no longer a term for an approach to making music. Minimal now means techno, regardless of how many elements are used and how an impact is achieved. So, with this mix, I've decided to play my idea of minimal techno in the vein Robert Hood described above: raw and stripped down to its core essentials, but always very danceable.

With that said, minimal techno was originally intended as a refuge from the rave/hedonism-aspects that techno as a genre was drifting towards. As such, some of the tunes towards the end could perhaps be accused of not adhering fully to this "minimal" principle, and this mix isn't "minimal" in its entirety. However, in 2009, I think this sentiment is no longer all that relevant. On the contrary: as far as I'm concerned, techno needs to take the rave out of Hipsterville and back into the club, and that's what this mix will partly contribute to. You'll see what I mean.

Oh boy. You're certainly taking my ass to school on how to do some proper fucking minimal. This is just total madness, I'm an hour and ten mins into this, and it still just keeps getting better and heavier by the second! I can't even begin to imagine how it's going to end!

What was that track at the one hour mark? Crazy track, and that sample has Dein Schweiss written all over it

MADNESS I'M TELLING YOU! MAAADNESS!!

i highly recommend tracking down a copy of robert hood's 'deep concentration: the grey area' mix if you can

Listening to old UR tracks on YouTube has gotten me in the mood for techno.

mirror anyone? megaupload is megagay

Posted by montana on May-19-2009 16:21:

just stunning.

the only transition that bothered me was the one where you started kicking into high gear as it felt a bit rushed and to use a term i've said too many times, it was a kick in the balls at the wrong time.

but other than that, this builds well, bangs hard and winds down smoothly.

Posted by montana on May-20-2009 15:19:

actually, never mind the comment about kick in the balls in the wrong place. i took a listen on this on headphones and it made more sense now, i tend to listen to mixes more critically on headphones than in front of the computer.

it was stunning either way.

I thought it was a bit odd, cos I can't remember any point where it markedly shifts pace like that (not an intentional shift, anyway). Cheers for listening, as always.

I don't have any proper webspace at the moment, so if anyone could host the set for me it would be much appreciated.

Posted by Az on May-20-2009 17:52:

sendspace?

Just software. The tunes are bought online or taken from my record collection, though.
