Underground Disco Mix

I had tough time getting this mix to go, this was recorded after a third try.

Equipment used: 2 x SL 1200MK2, DJM-800, Native Instruments Traktor Scratch Pro + hardware. The mix is about half MP3's and half actual vinyl - you'll be able to tell apart based on the sound, I'm sure of it.

Anyways, here it is:
This mix is dedicated to Patrick Cowley, the legend, a pioneer, who would have produced many great electronic music albums and produced many great remixes if his life wasn't cut short by AIDS in '82.

NOTE: A lot of people say that Patrick Cowley's remix of Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" was brilliant - but it is not even close to the brilliance of his remix of Two Tons Of Fun (the last track on this mix). Its so much ahead of its time, sounds a bit like acid house. Check it out!

130 BPM / 192 kbps / 75 minutes - yeah, thats a pretty fast-paced disco mix, for sure.

Tracklisting:
01. Droids - (Do You Have) The Force [1977]
02. Disco Dream And The Androids - Dream Machine (1979)
03. Kat Mandu - The Break (1979)
04. Patrick Cowley - Sea Hunt (1981)
05. Kano - It's A War (1980)
06. Kebekelektrik - War Dance (1977)
07. Giorgio Moroder - I Wanna Rock You (1979)
08. Purple Flash - We Can Make It (1984)
09. Blush - Lift Off (1979)
10. The Immortals - The Ultimate Warlord (1979)
11. Machine - There But For The Grace Of God Go I (1979)
12. Patrick Cowley - Mind Warp (1982)
13. Two Tons Of Fun - I Got The Feeling (The Patrick Cowley Megamix) 1981

Feedback, please!!!

phil, you goddamn nailed it with this one. great tunes, good mixing, there was one transition in the beginning which was unfinished and one from mindwarp into tonnes of fun was messy but other than that it was bumping.

i liked that remix of two tonnes of fun, but mindwarp was just like the title says mindwarping. i need to track that one down, so goddamn good.

well done phil.

Thanks! I was actually more of concerned of transition between Kebekelektrik and Moroder - I really killed that one, but thats what happens when I had to do it in one go. The last transition you're talking about was almost impossible, because Two Tons Of Fun track did not have constant BPM throughout it, and it sounded like it was not beatmatched properly. And I held the loop for too long.

Anyways, I appreciate your feedback. Expect in the next couple days something in your PM box from me ...

mirror? my ISP seem to have decided megaupload is a bad place

It's like trance... only so 80s

Hmm the second track is quite nice. Not too sure about the vocals, but oh well. Third one is great too, this is quite a nice mix. Plenty more very solid tunes, quite a good mix!

I guess you like more radio-friendly disco stuff. I'll probably make a mix like that sometime.

Yeah, I feel the same about that Androids track. I wish there was an instrumental version of it - I am not a big fan of its vocals.

Done. See the first post - I added a SendSpace mirror.

Thanks for all the feedback so far. The main point of this mix - other than to accomodate a request, was to showcase Patrick Cowley's sound. In particularly the last two tracks.

Nice mix - nice to see the Droids track there - one of my favourites! Some very nice transitions too.

I've been rocking this set out alot recently. Some of the mixing is harsh but that can only be explained due to most of the music not having very easy endings to mix out too. Overall, I think you did a solid job, mate. I wouldn't expect disco to sound so..."spacey" at times. But loving it, anyway.

Would love to hear you do a new wave set sometime.

I am such a rookie when it comes to mixing, I am trying to master the art of it. Especially since I go in one take, on the turntables (some vinyl) with computer interface and MP3 - all in one mix.

New wave, eh? We'll see about that, its a good style, but I have neglected it due to other 80's fancies like synth-pop and italo-disco - which I have invested a LOT of time and money into. Then there's also synthesizer dance / space synth - you may also like that if you are interested in spacey music.

EDIT: Did you mean "New Beat" or "New Wave" - because there's a big difference there. I realized this after I remembered you posted on the New Beat thread in Music Discussion. I certainly will make a new beat mix in the future, plenty of tracks to choose from

Thanks to everyone for all the feedback so far. Perhaps another disco mix will be in the making, in the future. Right now I am concentrating on the next mix, Canadian '90s eurodance sound.

just got around to listen to it.. really nice. good job.

Randomly clicked on this thread for something to listen to at work; pleasantly surprised.

Well done. The thing that was so shocking to me was listening to half the mix before reading the initial post and learning that all the tracks are from late 70s/80s. Couldn't believe that such music sounded fairly recent but was so old.

Hey! Thanks for waking me up from my hibernation. I am glad you enjoyed the mix. Got an email notification of your post

I gotta put up a new mix sometime, I am thinking something along the lines of italo-disco or spacesynth. Too bad the interest is low, not always worth the effort.

I have a very shitty new wave collection - wouldn't be enough for a good mix. I will probably make another underground disco mix - because I have many tunes at my disposal for that

It will be hard to top this one though!
