Calgary police are investigating after a man died following an altercation at a community centre event.

Officers were called to a hall run by the Penbrooke Meadows Community Association at about 2:30 a.m. Monday for a "weapons complaint," police said.

"One of the persons involved in the altercation had already left the scene, had been taken to one of the hospitals by a person at that function," Insp. Frank Reuser said.

The man, about 25 to 30 years old, died in the hospital from his injuries. Police, who are treating the case as a suspicious death, are not releasing details about what kind of weapon was involved.

"Nobody has been arrested, nobody is in custody. Numerous people at the event were taken in for questioning. At this point, gang unit is not related," Reuser said.

The hall was rented out for a dominoes tournament that was supposed to end at 3 a.m., the southeast community association told CBC News. The person who booked the facility has done so before several times in the past with no problems, a spokesperson added.

Witnesses said the man was a DJ at the event and that he was stabbed, according to some reports.

More information is expected after an autopsy is completed Wednesday.

Maybe the DJ dropped some hip hop, and they were all into New Country.

Police say DJ killed over music

Friends say victim Blacka Ranxx was well-known in reggae community

By BILL KAUFMANN, SUN MEDIA

The Calgary Sun

CALGARY -- Police say the city's latest homicide victim, whom friends identify as a popular DJ, might have been killed over musical issues.

Early Monday morning, police say a fight at the Penbrooke Meadows Community Association, 6100 Penbrooke Dr. S.E., ended with one man being injured and dying later in hospital.

The event was a dinner and dance wind-up for a domino tournament.

Friends have identified the victim by his DJ name, Blacka Ranxx, a Jamaican-born DJ who was working the party.

Staff Sgt. Patty McCallum said witnesses have described a number of motives, among them personal disputes that could involve Ranxx's livelihood.

"There were comments made that it could have been about music or respect, more a disagreement over personal views," said McCallum.

The victim and suspect police are seeking "are acquaintances ... the suspect is part of that musical culture."

An autopsy has been done and while police didn't divulge the cause of death, Sun sources say the man was stabbed.

Ranxx's friends are pleading for peace around a city dance party scene they say has turned menacing. DJ Butta, 35, who spun records with Ranxx at a party Friday night, described him as a "good man" who loved music.

"He was well known in the dancehall and reggae communities," he said.

"He loved music, that was his life, his life revolved around music."

Butta is now helping organize a memorial party for Ranxx at Coyotes Bar and Grill, 7-135 Whitefield Drive N.E., on Saturday in an effort to both raise money for his family and to call for an end to violence.

"Basically, unity is what we're looking to spread," said Butta.

"I've lived in a few cities in Canada and there's always confrontations and people have beefs or whatever.

"It's time to let it all go, we're all grown-up people, there's no reason to carry that on, especially at a party where people are there to have a good time and dance."

Another of the slain DJ's friends, Samiya Hussein, wrote on a memorial Facebook page her brother was murdered at a dance party last September where Ranxx spun discs.

On Sept. 7, Abdullah Hussein, 20, was fatally shot at a dance party at the Albert Park Radisson Heights Community Centre in what police say was a drug and gang-related assault.

Ranxx's death is an outrage, committed at a time when people should have been free to enjoy themselves, said Jimmy Brown, an organizer of last weekend's party.

"I don't think it's fair, it shouldn't have happened," said Brown, who watched Ranxx bleed to death near his DJ station.

Police say they've interviewed more than 30 people but believe there are more witnesses who haven't come forward.

Ranxx's death is Calgary's 14 homicide of the year.

I used to live a mile north of that area, it's a lower income neighborhood with a slightly rough reputation, drug dealing, minor criminals etc.
