Looking at getting a mid level DSLR camera early this summer. I had been looking at the Canon 40D/50D/ Rebel T1, and the Nikon D90, and D5000.
Right now I'm leaning heavily toward the Nikon D90. It seems to offer the best of the abilities for it's price.
I'm looking at getting the camera as a body only and then investing the bulk of the cash into a single top quality lens.
Right now I'm really eyeing up the Nikor 24-70mm F2.8 for that camera as an all around kind of lens.
I'm going to use the camera primarily as an around the house/cottage deal. I realize the portability issues that can't be worked around with a DSLR. I already have a great pocket sized camera.
So with that out of the way my questions.
1. Will the Nikor 24-70mm F2.8 have enough versatility to use as an all around lens? If not, where does its weakness lay?
2. Is there some kind of flawed logic that I've used to arrive at the D90. Is there reasons why I shouldn't be looking at that camera?
3. Where's the best place to get a great deal? I've heard it's a massive no no to buy from the states despite the much better pricing. I really want the warranty, so I'm not into bringing it across the border and then having warranty hassles. Is there anywhere in the GTA that has great deals? I've heard there's some stores in Alberta that are great, to save the PST. I've also heard Anden camera is a good spot to start looking.
Any other tips or info would be seriously appreciated.
I think I just saw somewhere that Aden had the D90 on sale for $1,249.99 which you could then Price match at FS or BB.
sorry, i know nothing about nikon.

Henry is a rip off, bought my Canon 5Dmk2 from Vistek and saved on the PST (thats 300$ right there).
BTW video on the D90 sucks balls, if that's something you might be intrested in.
p.s. Canon > Nikon.

Here is a good site regarding prices for us Canadians:

Looks like Aden is cheapest in Ontario.

NOT! Well maybe in your opinion.

I like my Nikon just fine. My previous Canon camera was nothing but problems. YMMV.

I am now waiting for the latest update to the D300 (D400??). Nikon vs Canon will go on for every. They each have their own fanboys! (Nikon is better) Anyway, the D90 is the best you can buy now. Well best for your buck. The noise on a D90 is awesome!! You can shoot at ISO 3200 and still be ok. As far as video, don't let that be a selling feature. The video is good, but you cannot auto-focus in video mode. Your choice to get a D90 is a good one. Go for it ![]() Oh as far as lenses go, the 24-70 f/2.8 is an AWESOME lens. You can later complement that with a wide 14-24 2.8 and the tele 70-200 2.8. Just so you know, this camera business can spiral out of control...lol...so you must control yourself. |
check that Rolling shutter issue with all the D90s.

notice how vertical lines become squiggly.
My buddy has a D300 and he can't get over the quality of the pics produced by my 5Dmk2, two cameras supposed to be equivalent.
Canon Optics are far superior to anything Nikon produces, their only strong point is their flash system. Nikon caught up with the noise levels at higher isos, but Canon has the edge in that dept.
Here's some eye candy, I shot with no flash, just street lighting, if the video lags, your computer sucks

Aden by far has the best prices, comparing to tons of stores. You might be able to price match them with Best Buy or Future Shop depending on who you talk to cause their excuse is that Aden has no return policy. My buddy just bought a 50D yesterday at the Future Shop downtown and was able to get the price match after a few minutes talking to the manager.
P.S. I got a Rebel XS body for sale if anyone is interested, 6 months old and LCD screen protector on it.

Just to drop my two cents...for the purposes you need this camera for, you really are going way over kill with your budget. I've taken amazing photos with my point and shoot (albeit things like sharpness/less noise/DOF will be greatly improved on an SLR)
Just as you listed your intentions, remember that unless you fully dedicate yourself to learning how to use your camera properly in full manual mode all the equipment in the world won't give you great photos. Take the time to read books: i recommend Understanding Exposure You'll learn a lot from this book. All you have to do is look at customer images from expensive lens on amazon to realize a lot of people have expensive gear and don't know how to use it. And for the recommendation, I recently saw someone selling a Canon 30D for $400 on Craigslist with 14000 actuations or something like that, a pretty good deal. With kids since you'll be doing handheld a lot, IS will definitely come in handy. If you've already got your mind made up you want to spend a lot on lens though, get something thats 18mm or even wider, because the 1.6 crop factor will make that 28.8mm giving you a decent wide angle, anything else and you won't be getting as close as you want.
Last thing - If you're a photoshop user, look into "Photo Tools 2" from onOne software. The program is braindead easy to use (although somewhat expensive) but i've made point and shoot images look nothing short of DSLR worthy using this software, and garbage bin images get compliments after I rendered them.
