Does the jp8000 really sound too cliche for today or...

Is it worth getting one?i make trance/psytrance

I was considering prophet 08 also

I don't see why it would be "too cliche," unless you're planning to sit there and make supersaw patches all day.

the presets are outdated, if your interested in making your own the JP-8000 is not bad a choice, but the bad thing is that it has only 2 oscillators and no unison. Your better off getting a jp8080. My advice is save and get the prophet

yes prophet looks very nice too

I had borrowed a JP8080 for a month. They are a one trick pony and are useless for anything other than supersaws. The oscillators are weaker than a cheap softsynth and the filters sound like ass. Xhip does good enough supersaws for me to not ever bother buying a JP.

I agree. Go for a Nord Lead 2 instead. they go for about the same price ...

I actually tried a nl2x and was very disappointed, it sounded so thin and lifeless.....far from what I had expected

Maybe its just the presets too...

On the other hand I tried a sh-201 and was impressed by its sound. was very raw i found, but the synth itself is a little simple, so thats why I was considering the jp8080

You have to use it right.

Check this Nord Lead 2 demo out : http://www.sendspace.com/file/oqiqq2

The JP is a great synth, it`s just a lot of other synthesizers and romplers in VST that sound like it now.

It sounds good, phat, the supersaw works well, the OSC Common section can make some unique sounds, the arpeggiator is great, it has the feedback oscilliator.

But the range of lead sounds you get from it is pretty narrow, so when you get bored of the supersaw the synth may become obsolete.

Posted by cristianokeller on May-20-2009 06:58:

Simple, JP-8000 is a CLASSIC. A must have for a hardware studio because of its classics supersaw leads. Today it can be used for pads and backsynths/arps/plucks... Sounds nice and harmonic rich. Ilike my JP8K and will never sell it.

But it's true that a Virus does lot more things...

Posted by Zak McKracken on May-20-2009 08:26:

its great for strings, pads and even some acid stuff, atleast the JP8080 rack, which have vocoder-filter and distortion. i also liked the reverb, delay and eq section on the JP8080, the unison was fucking crap on it. i dont know if the keyboard version has any of that? I liked the cold industrial bass sounds it could make too. It is shit to program though and Im never getting it again. Its big and ugly and the filter+amp envelope, omg those are crap! Get a Clavia Nord Rack 2X instead.

What? its just about the easiest VA synth to program ever made.

I agree the JP sounds very very plastic and the effects are really bad, but it has its place for a few sounds, more so for the feedback oscillator. Its really good for creating effects and drones etc.

i never said it was hard, its just shit, it feels like shit when turning the faders and the knobs, it feels like its gonna fall apart and the midi values jumps over the place. i remember i just wanted to smash it into peaces when touching that knob so carefull to get the value i wanted. what a peace of crap lol. and the vocoder function? suddenly all the synth faders and knobs are filter settings of the vocoder, yes it sound horribly good but when ur switching to adjust you synth sound again all the knobs are out of place hahaha. and the two parts? man i hate hardware. knobs with multiple functions is a no-go imo

this comment from the post your studiopics thread describes that synth best:

oh shit!

Your JP-8000 is curved in it plastic chassis? Mine too!
JP-8000 is an original banana synth!!

This problem is very ridiculous! another problem is the clicks in attak
..

lol
this comment was mine a long time ago..
but I've solved the banana problem... I've made a repair in it's chassis.
Also the attak clicks can be solved by routing a slower attak to the ribbon when filter closes.. I use an expression pedal to control the ribbon so I can play with two hands and without clicks

Ok, I think tomorrow I'll post here a tutorial on how to make a repair in JP-8000 chassis (with photos) by yourself and how to tweak the patches and get rid of the clicks... wait

i much prefer a hands on approach personally. But this is due to me starting out many years ago before softsynths were a big thing.

i agree that the JPs knobs and sliders are terrible. I also think that dave smith instruments synths have horrible encoders but it is justified as the sound is top notch!

i like my jp8000 still: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNhtr72r-0I

I love my JP too. She's in hospital at the moment with a faulty ribbon controller, but we're gonna consumate till the early light when she comes home again!

Is the SUPERWAVEP8 still the closest emulator we have for this synth? Are there any patches for other VSTs that emulate some wicked sounds from the JP?

I found this to be much much closer - http://www.rb2k1.com/rrsv2.htm

So much so I sold my JP8080.

Posted by Eldritch on May-21-2009 09:24:

Why would it sound cliche? Just because it has a supersaw waveform doesn't mean you have to use it Rank1 style. It's a very flexible waveform and can be used for alot of different types of sounds. Also, it has the feedback osc which is sadly forgotten most of the time.

No, and it never has been. Only to people who haven't used a real JP8k. SuperwaveP8 is crap. Don't even get me started on this terrible synth.
Synth1 is much more similar to the JP8k supersaw.

Posted by Storyteller on May-21-2009 09:28:

But synth1 is based on the nord lead

yeah i agree, it does feel like shit when your starting with the default patch, but you have to work hard on it to get what you want.

Posted by Watts on May-21-2009 14:36:

You can create interesting sounds using two different patches on the lower/upper tiers and the synth set to dual.

I like the JP-8080 a lot.
