Web Hosting Services

Hey guys, I'm looking to get a web hosting service and was wondering if any of you guys could give me any first hand advice on the servers you are using.

I'm looking for a server with unlimited disk space (or at least reasonably large, 500GB+) and unlimited file transfers.

Thanks!

File-sharing is illegal.

Most places that offer "unlimited space and bandwidth" usually are over selling their services and you will get crap performance from them.

That being said, Dreamhost has a lot of space and bandwidth and tons of cool features....

I'd recommend them. Having SSH access is pretty nice.

When it comes to hosting definitely don't look for what might seem like best bang for the buck. That is unless all you need is to simply store files without running PHP/MySQL. In that case opt for specialized solutions like DropBox.

Dreamhost is a good option. mediatemple if you want to be like the cool kids. slicehost if you know what you're doing.

dreamhost is where its at.

Never liked mediatemple, clients hosted there have always had issues...

Slicehost is awesome. I use one of their servers as a shoutcast distribution server. It works out nicely.

If you're really 1337sk33t you'd use some of amazons web services like E3 and S3...

Thanks guys, what I want is to move my Wordpress.com blog to my own domain and run it using the Wordpress.org software. The reason I'm interested in something with unlimited hosting/file transfer is because I will be hosting a lot of sets.

Check out the blog @ http://spiritsoulmixarchive.wordpress.com

I've been looking at some servers that work well with the Worpress software and so far Bluehost seems like a very good option, but that $9 sale from Dreamhost is fucking unreal...moreso since most of you seem to concur that it's the best host on the net.

You should take your own advice and stop listening to "trance"

dreamhost has a one click install of wordpress

OK, I'm sold

Check the conditions carefully though. Unlimited rarely means truly unlimited, especially on shared servers.

I'd change the background colour or the font colour, little hard to read the text if you ask me.

Just thought i'd give a tiny bit of feedback not that you asked for it, but from my experience it's always nice hearing people's opinions on how to improve a site.

Like the somple design and layout though

Orginally from explanation of unlimited

Here are some specific examples of things not allowed:

* Copyrighted content you are not the copyright holder of.
* File upload / sharing / archive / backup / mirroring / distribution sites.
* A site created primarily to drive traffic to another site.
* Making your account resources available (whether for free or pay) to the general public.

What about that? Sharing sets to me would seem like sharing??

I have 50 sets on my dreamhost server and it is working fine. They just do not want illegal file sharing going on.

Posted by woscar on May-23-2009 01:16:

Yeah, was just reading on those terms myself...that part seems tricky

Posted by woscar on May-23-2009 01:46:

OK...so are you guys positive Dreamhost will serve my purpose? Will they not shut it down if I host a couple mixes?

I have hosted sets and music on my account forever, as long as you arent using like thousands of gigs a month they wont care.

Dreamhost is really awesome... custom DNS, compile your own versions of PHP, all sorts of advanced shit you'll never use but be glad to have it if you want it.

OK...go to my blog http://spiritsoulmixarchive.wordpress.com do you think it would pass the test?

I dont know, maybe, as long as you have a legit site probably. Its only 10$ so if they shut it down within a year what do you lose?

I seriously doubt theyd shut you down though... as long as you have the right to distribute those mixes then its probably not going to be an issue.
