best move for a DJ trainee with no equipment

with a laptop and hundreds of trance MP3 singles in my hand, and if all i want is to create a couple of mix albums, should i just settle with DJ software like Traktor or Virtual Turntables, then see if DJ-ing is really my cup of tea?

and assuming that i do want to get into this scene, is it a good idea to start practicing with stanton's Final Scratch (considering i already have about 1,000 singles)?

play around with the virutal programs, and if you like it, start buying vinyl now
then as you get some, get all cozy with a friend who has turntables and start practicing
then save up for your own setup

that's what i did, and it seems to be working

Yeah, I started out with traktor/bpm studio etc, got a feel for mixing with an external mixer, got to liking it, and recently bought a CD setup. I love it. And adjusting to the controls was a real breeze, particularly after using BPM Studio.

heh, i'd LOVE to control traktor with an external mixer! practiced a bit with traktor this morning, felt great.

Well, you don't actually control traktor, you just use the mixer to mix the output from your soundcards.

heh the way i started out was buying turntables + mixer just to try it! I hadn't touch any turntable before that or any software. But luckily, I end up liking it.

I know some people who played with Traktor and ended up NOT liking turntables in the end because it's a little different. It all comes down to whether or not you have the patience to do either. For example, I dont have the patience to play with Traktor. I think it sucks vs. touching the vinyl, but that's just my opinion.

The best 100% sure bet AFTER using Traktor and BEFORE buying turntables is to try a friend's or a store's set of turntables. You should be 100% sure that you want to spend 500-1000$ for direct drive Turntables + more for the mixer AND not have any regrets. This is what I tell to all the people I know who ask me about turntablism.

yeah I started on traktor too . But then I just couldnt take the PC-DJ name anymore! so I switched to vinyl, and spent ~$1,500 on records, tt, needles, mixer and learned on my own, I have no regrets at all, and IM LOVING IT!!

I can't believe you people....how can you save enough money to buy TTs or records...I can hardly pay my phone bill and I'm going crazy....mean it...There's got to be a way to save some money.

ah, you are in turkey? yeah, if i remember correctly, they don't like that over there..

anyway.. just quit doing whatever you are wasting money on, be it alcohol, or whatever.

i also took the insurance off my car, that saved me a ton of money too.

and above all.. stop calling yourself DJ ahter, if you are still wondering how to get decks!

BPM Studio Pro 4.6 is a good way to start.. PM me if u want it..

Pretty much the only way to have enough money for this addiction is to get some shit job that pays decently and work your ass off during the day so you can spin at night... and then find a gig. I work full time being bored and doing shit that I don't really like just so I can keep mixing.

Kind of like what I am doing, but I am still trying to get into college for Radio Broadcasting, maybe there is a way for me to become famous through this, the radio job I mean! Don't really want to be a radio DJ though, top 40 is not really my cup of tea!

gotta give him a lotta credit for playing semi-underground dance tunes on BBC radio 1, even though he's not exactly playing trance these years. just to let you know you don't have to strictly play top 40 on a radio station, me thinks.

in US u do.. There are absolutely no trance/dance/housr radio stations here.. We lucky if a radio station transmits some dance tunes from local clubs @ 1am sometimes..

true, but once I was browsing through his tracklist on www.bbc.co.uk and he played a few tunes by Dr. DRE. WTF? I thought he played dance music. But than again there are ppl like Jules and Armin, but they fortunately live in other countries, not Canada. I mean I would love to become a local DJ that introduces the Trance music to the masses, but than it's gonna kill the whole vibe here in Toronto I think!

There's a public radio station near me that has a DJ (she's not super good) who does a rather odd mix of house/trance/disco/hiphop/I don't know what on thursday nights. And then there's me... I'm going to start doing a two hour show on a local station in a few days.

Just hope someone listens.

Just Replying to the initial question. What I would recommend is to get a cheap turntable from a second hand store or from a paper. It doesn't have to be a 1200 but it does have to have an adjustable pitch. So an old model would do fine. Once u start buying some vinyl just practise beat matching the song on the vinyl with a song playing on a stereo (ie CD or radio). This will give u the basic skill of DJing and will start you off on that vinyl addiction
