Exports - commodities: petroleum and petroleum products, machinery and equipment, metals, chemicals, ships, fish

While I disagree, there is one band that is utterly ridiculous however.

That video must have had the budget of a small movie!
the clothing is well done anyway...

Admittedly I'm not in the scene, but it just seems that everyone who is an IT nerd or general social invalid who can grow a beard and long hair, wear black t-shirts and feel like he's finally a badass instead of the kid that got bullied in the playground and still has trouble fitting in. Plus all the bands and songs are about "death, black, dark, satan, war, battle, corpses etc etc etc" real "badass" imagery that makes them feel tough. From the outside it looks like some kind of escapist fantasy, much like people that get absorbed into crappy fantasy fiction or warhammer or warcraft.

And ofcourse there's the girls who could never be attractive enough to be successful and popular (since it seems unfortunately for women attractiveness is tied to success). So they paint their eyes, nails and lips black, die their hair, get a few piercings and put on leather corsets and long dresses and suddenly they're "interesting" and edgy rather than just ugly.

Added to all this is the fact that technically the musical composition is not brilliant, the lyrics are puerile. So overall it seems that it's a genre that's much more about image/escapism than music.

.. i could be completely wrong ofcourse lol

You could apply this kind of stereotyping to any music that has spawned any kind of a subculture, really.

I love Norwegian ladies... So yeah, that alone makes it the world's richest country, in my book.

Well there's no doubt it's quite nerdy music but even still, the kinds of nerds who listen to metal are a lot more interesting then the kinds that tend to not like music until they play an instrument and then think cheese classical is the best and most intelligent thing since sliced bread. The lyrics are often about satan and death, not so much war and etc (except for the case of dimmu borgir but they aren't terribly true black anyway, not even hard enough) although they are allmost allways not discernable anyway and or in norwegian/latin. I've never seen any black metal chicks specifically... although in general I agree there's nothing fancy about metal chicks although I think you might be referring to goth chicks to an extent. Which I do sortof agree that some goth chicks actually are quite ugly and nothing will change that and goth guys go for them regardless. However some are very attractive and its not inherent that just because they are wearing lots of makeup that they are ugly.

Long story short: dimmu borgir is shit. They are pretty much the only black metal band I actually find cheesy I've heard. I highly disagree about the music however... it has a focus on melody and emotion, and a lot of it is very ambient influenced. Even gorgoroth who are one of the most brooding and foremost bands have quite a few ambient tracks.

Basically yes. Don't forget back in the day tangerine dream was extremely nerdy music that everyone thought was just shit and all about escapeism.

Here's a good representation of what the orthadox (tr00 kvlt) black metal sound sounds like: Often having guitars going constantly to create a sortof ambient droney effect, with changes in tempo and a main theme but not a reliance on it. With hypnotic but often drumming with quite interesting fills and changes.

It seems to mostly have escaped popularity as well, apart from Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth (which I don't actually mind, although a lot of their stuff is more sortof traditional metal and they are very symphonic) and Satyricon (which are just pretty normal stuff, I don't really know why they are popular). Compared to death metal for instance its done quite well, especially concidering how crap deathcore (metalcore is basically emo... so think emo singing only rooo roo death growling) and some melodic death metal is. There aren't really too many children of bodom/slipknot's of the genre.

Agreed. I think dogmatically following any genre is kinda silly.

I must admit I haven't actually sat and listened to much of it. Are there any tracks you would recommend I listen to?

What's bad about tangerine dream?

Burzum definitely, his earlier/middle stuff is a cross between black metal and ambient/dark ambient (often with the finishing track being purely synths) and his later stuff is purely modern classical/ambient so you can't go too badly with him.

His later stuff:

and earlier(I love the main melody in this one):

There's also Tvangest, which are symphonic black metal and their stuff is very symphonic/classical in feeling and has plenty of nice melodies, although you'll probably hate their vocalist. They also have 2 of their albums up for download off their site for free (quality is 192kbps mp3)
[[ LINK REMOVED ]]

Agalloch is slower symphonic black, although some of their tracks are more doom or folk metal(not that it makes much difference I'm sure). Here's a quite solid track of theirs with clean vocals (that even my dad liked, even though he hates all things metal).

and there'ss abigail williams, although their first ep is somewhat metalcore influenced and their album after that is quite hard (they haven't released anything further).
here's an instrumental of theirs from their second album (more than that really, no percussion/guitars either)

and another track of theirs
