How long before we can play 10+ year old tracks?

Nothing stopping us now, but how long before we can play tracks from 10-15 years ago and get away with it and not be called stuck in the past or "retro"?

I'd play trance if I could get away with playing tracks from the 90's again.

I mean EDM for the most part has had a pretty timeless sound since the mid 90's at least. Its hard to date a track just by the production quality or content.

Yea but I mean soley playing tracks from 10 years ago...

I guess the underlying question is "would anyone care?"

I doubt party goers besides people that hang out on places like TA would even recognize tracks from 10 years ago and the only people who you'd have to worry about criticism from is other DJs... and who cares what they thing...

The first time I played with Serato at Spundae, my laptop fried at the beginning of my set. I had a CD book with classic trance. I finished the remainder of my set with old trance. Everyone got really excited and they thought I purposely did a classic trance set!

Play whatever you want mate!

Im gonna drop the original Lizard mix tomorrow night which is what, exactly 10 years old now?

If it mixes and sounds good theres nothing wrong with it

I hopefully get a pack of vinyls today where the oldest is from 1993. So, who cares? I just say 'Juno Reactor - Jungle High' and 'Fluke - Bubble'

I anyway don't care about release dates. All that matters is the flow!

Am I the only one who sees the flaw in the question?!?!

You can play ten year old tracks AFTER TEN YEARS!

You homo!

I don't see the problem dropping old tracks into sets. Last time I saw Armin at Gods Kitchen last year he played Binary Finary 1999 and the crowd lapped it up.

If you want to play a full set of it then it'd probably be best to advertise the set as being a classics set.

Always preferred the RAF mix. The original was a bit anti-climatic after such an intense breakdown.

Thats the thing though, why would you even need to advertise it as such?

I guess this thread is more academic than practical...

You don't mate. If you want to do that just go for it. I was just saying what I'd do personally. I for one wouldn't care what a DJ played so long as the tunes were good.

The very fact you asked the question means there's some kind of stigma attached to just playing old tracks. Like you say, you get accused of being retro or living in the past.

If you can get sets based on just playing 90s Trance then go for it, I'd come and listen

my current sets are mostly comprised of tracks from 1-6 years ago. records i don't feel i played out enough, and people didn't hear enough. everyone keeps asking me where i get this crazy stuff they've never heard...

i drop a 90s techno track every now and then, pitched down to 128ish
Neil Landstrumm!

There is no such thing as a record that's too old for the dancefloor.

If a track does it for me once, it'll do it again imo

Dude, there are no rules out there saying when it is a good time to play music that is 10 to 15 years old. If there is, somebody show them to me. All that matters is if you play the right tunes, with the right tunes, at the right time...with the right people on the floor. And I'll drop a 95 song, in a heart beat!! I'm willing to bet that there are 95 tunes, that I have, that most of today's people wouldn't be able to tell what year the trance tune was made. There's a good chance that they might even think it's a new song, too..

Fanciulli dropped Energy Flash and Big Fun on friday night and it was nothing but cheers and smiles all around, even from the chin-strokers.

Records can be over-played, or placed inappropriately in a set, but they can never be too old.

Posted by djimmersion on Jun-04-2009 04:16:

when I played at a rave in SF a few years ago no one really cared what kinda electronic music I played or how new it was, people just had a good time with what i had to offer

unfortunately if I play a hop hop gig people can be really anal about what hip hop i play or how many throw back tracks I throw in a set, and I like the old school hip hop and funk tunes

I think a lot of 10+ year old tracks sound better than a lot of stuff being released today. Back then they had to more with less, and I prefer the sound of hardware over ableton any day.
