b-stock mixers

need new gear, refuse to buy it for list. any experience with these? is it risky or is it usually the same as buying it second hand from someone on ebay /craigslist

I think the answer is really more gray-area than either 'safe' or 'unsafe', you know? Some places just open a box from brand new stock, but since the tape has been cut on the packaging they're not legally allowed to sell it as brand-new anymore. Other places could consider their B-stock to be used equipment or demo equipment. If you still get a full manufacturers warranty with the item and is from a reputable dealer, you should be safe.

Well depends what you're buying - it is indeed a bit of a grey area.

I would NEVER buy a pioneer mixer used (or new ) , but easily consider vestax, A&H, rane or ecler.

It's quite simple to tell if a mixer has been cared for, just look for these:

classic signs of wear around knobs and faders
loose jacks or connectors
smell it (not joking - you tell if it's been near or contains smoke/beer/food etc.)
Test it while moving knobs/fader and listen for crackle/problems/etc.

As for truntables, do the same but technics are built like tanks so if they look good and work well then have some confidence buying them not much to go wrong and will like new after a simple service.

CDJ's are slightly different as faults can be intermittant but if they look in good shape and work for more than 10 mins, chances are you'll be alright. Don't buy second hand gear without testing it first, unless you're buying on ebay and have some recourse/paypal protection. I've bought loads of gear on ebay over the years and never had a problem - you've just got to be careful and realise if it's really cheap, there's probably something wrong.

i go in to get it and i don't fucking believe me eyes, they sent out my Xone 3D and in the box, (Brand new unit!) not only that but....it's a fucking Xone 4D

basically just saved me the trouble of ebay , so now, all i need to buy are 2 technics, which is around 800$ at walmart

That's the most beautiful thing I think I've ever heard. I wonder if it really was a mistake or if Allen & Heath just upgrades people now, if the 3D's within Warranty. The 3D is at end of life, isn't it?

just hope they gave you one of the new ones (serial #0900 range not 082/083). I just took my 4d in for repairs yesterday, they said they've had lots of practice on the early models and there were a few on the workbenches.

but good to hear they looked after your after the store tried to fob you off.
