Really, who gives a watery shit how they do it in Europe? We have one of the highest standards of living and our economy actually isn't in the crapper right now. But sure, let's do whatever Europe does; we'll start by building unreliable cars and wearing those male thongs they all sport on the beach.

I went to the store to pick up a few things today and forgot my "environmentally friendly" shopping bag so I just took the grocery carrier home with me.

fucking idiots
so I ask for a paper bag instead - "oh we didn't order them yet"

Posted by bcope on Jun-02-2009 21:22:

in all fairness this thing kind of came out of left field. we have been setting up a retail business for the past 5 months, applying for 7698394894 different permits and numbers and such and the first i heard about this was reading about it in Metro on the subway on the way to the store this morning....

Posted by FunkyCrew on Jun-02-2009 21:38:

so it looks like we get no alternative - I'm supposed to go clothes shopping with a groccery bag, because the stores are not offering recyclable paper bag alternatives

fucking great!

Posted by elFreak on Jun-02-2009 21:40:

paper shopping mall bags are still available for about a dollar in every mall that i have been to, so unless the clothes shopping you are referring to is going on at the salvation army, chances are you can afford it.

i don't really like this law, but it is only a big deal if you can't afford the nickel really.

I'm not talking about mall stores, duh!

if you know you are going shopping, is it really that hard to bring a bag?

ffs most womens purses today look big enough to fit a moutain bike into.

1.get bag
2.leave in trunk of car
3.profit.

i mean come on lol.

srsly man, you're getting on my nerves
who said I have a car? that's one
two - do you know a girl that goes shopping knowing that she will buy something for sure? I popped into Winners on my lunch, and I don't have bags freely laying around at my desk
I mean if Winners at least gave boxes for their shoes, or wrapped clothes in tisue paper like GAP does - I'd carry it to my office like that and deal with the shortage of a bag later - they offer NO alternative!
and my purse is still a normal size, thanks very much! it fits a wallet and my glasses

thank god for stores like H&M which switched their plastic bags to paper - what ALL normal stores should do!

Posted by elFreak on Jun-02-2009 21:53:

ahh so you are too poor to afford the 5 cents then, carry on.

Posted by DigiNut on Jun-02-2009 22:43:

I read yesterday that city hall is telling the business owners that they actually do not have to remit - just charge 5 cents for the bags and they can do whatever they want with the proceeds.

That decision seems to have been panned by people of all stripes, but I think it's the only good move they've made so far. This makes it much closer to ordinary itemized pricing as opposed to a tax, and businesses can use it to lower prices or improve operations. Doesn't mean they will, of course, but the ability to re-invest means that competitive forces and consumer choice will dictate in part how that money is spent.

Now let's see how long it takes for them to change their mind.
