Simplify This?

So, I have a patch I am working on in z3ta. Its a super saw using 6 oscillators. No biggie, it uses 2% of my cpu.

However, I have automation setup that alters the waveform X/Y of each osc in real time using the waveshaper in z3ta. This causes it to jump to 89% cpu. I set the X/Y functions to an X/Y pad, that is 12 functions being automated by two knobs. I have the knobs turning back and forth I think 1/4 beats. [does a full lfo 4 times in one beat] I put z3ta down to draft mode from High and it didn't change a thing. And its Reverbed.

Here is what it sounds like:

Without Automation:

With Automation:

Is there a better way to get this effect? I like it because it doesn't alter volume or cutoff.

Here is an Image of the stages.

It goes through this series of changes 4 times per beat. Also, only iirc 2 of the oscs are sawtooth, the other 4 are other shapes. But they go through the same changes.

Also, it "morphs" into these 4 stages. It doesn't just change. The morphing causes a nice detuned effect. In reality it has more than 4 stages, it has about 25 or something, but they go to fast so I just showed the 4 major states.

Automate and then freeze the track until you want to edit it again?

Yeah, but I still want to see if there is a better way to do this.

Edit: No answer? Case in point.

SOUNDS LIKE AMPLITUDE MODULATION TO ME

Posted by DJ RANN on Jun-04-2009 19:21:

It really does sound like simple amplitude modulation - That's a lot of perameter automation for not a lot of difference from the original sound.

I don't use z3ta so can't help much but I would try a synth that lets use do synced amplitude modulation, or worse come to worse draw very fine automation on the volume track, then bounce.

Oh wait FL cant do that.

I've only used Z3ta briefly but maybe just turn the reverb off as you can always use a verb send late?

Can you explain more about what this process is doing to the sound as I'm getting more and more into patch programming. It sounds to my ear like lfo'd amp or tremelo but what is this waveshaper doing?

Its changing the wavform in real time. The volume of the sound stays constant. I was exprimenting with automating the wavforms of all 6 oscs at once, when it got really slow. So I have't fully explored the possibilities of modding the wave forms in such a manner. I use z3ta because its the only synth I know where the wavform is changed with a simple X/Y parameter. Which I can map to a controller. I have it automated really fast as a simple demonstration. There are other ways you can change it. Such as over time effects and such. Its all exprimental stuff.
