Focal Monitorsading

Hey all,

Its monitor upgrade time.. I've never heard anything but praise for the Focal's so I'm thinking of going that route.
The decision is between the Twin 6 Be, or CMS65(being the cheaper option). Do I save the bucks and the CMS being adequate or do i go the whole hog for the twins? - This is purely for electronica, trance, prog etc .. mixing / mastering. The room is fairly small .. about 4mx4m.. although I will be moving into a big space soonish, about 6x5.

Any thoughts from anyone who has used either/both would be great!

My biggest issue here is that we have NO stores that keep stock, so there is no testing speakers out.. if you want it you buy it and there is no return so I need to be 100% sure I'm making the best decision up-front.. especially when spending this kind of money.

John

A difficult question. The only valid response is that you're going to get what you pay for. The CMSs will be great, I'd definitely still prefer them over HR824s

If you're not ready for something hugely expensive like the Twin 6s, maybe look into models from ADAM. Even the cheapest ADAM model has the same tweeter design as the most expensive, so that's a plus.

I'd consider something like Adam A7's.. but at the end of the day I want a pair of speakers that I can (for the rest of my production life) not blame for any failures in my mixes.. so that all blame can rest on my lack of ability

I'm currently using a pair of Tannoy precision 8's and a pair of reveals.. and as far as i'm concerned.. they're hi-fi speakers.. even the OLD tannoy system 800's are far better.

So anything would be a step up..

Then get the Twin 6s. That's definitely how I feel about them. From my point of view, they're the best you can get before you cross the line into ridiculous.

You'll also want a good DAC. I have the Apogee Mini-DAC. I find it to definitely be less harsh than MOTU's converters, but something along the lines of a MOTU will be fine if you want to save some money.

Agreed. Here is a photo of mine in the landscape orientation.

Mine are sadly living under a plastic sheet, due to no space for them where I have my gear setup.
I havent used them for quite a while, but they are fantastic. As these are my first,
I have no comparison to come with, except they are the most revealing, natural sounding
speakers I have ever heard. *duuh*
