Survival Horror
I've always been a huge fan of the genre in question. But I've only played a handful of games that would fit this description. Games like the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series, also Parasite Eve (although it lacks in 'horror'), it's still a prime example of the 'survival' that I'm looking for.
Do you know of any games that would fit in this genre? Preferrably for PS2, but PS1 and 3 will do nicely too, and why not even PC while were at it.
It can be more horror orientated than survival, and vice versa. As an example, I love Parasite Eve because the survival aspects of the game are so good, they make up for the lack of horror. So the suggestions don't have to be 50/50 survival and horror, but one can make up for the lack of the other, if that makes any sense!
condemned i found particularly terrifying. that came out across many systems, though other than PC im not sure which ones. also had the most satisfying melee combat ive experienced in a game.
aliens versus predator (the marine missions) are also scary as fuck.
many people found deadspace to be scary, but after the first few scares i wasn't that impressed. still worth a look though.
Bioshock is awesome! Also look at Penumbra and Left 4 Dead
Eventhough I'm not that into fps games, those are all good suggestions, Bioshock looks nothing short of awesome
This is what a scary scene looks like in my book;
bioshock is awesome, but its not even remotely scary. and condemned is indeed a first person game, but its not a shooter
you very very rarely ever have a pistol
also, i think that first person games are inherently more frightening.

| Originally posted by DuBam True, true. I guess I've just seen so many first-person shooters, that I have automatically thought of FP games as FPS games. So thanks for pointing out the difference. Condemned sounds intriguing. I'll look into that ![]() One thing that adds dramatically to the survival aspect, is when your BFG a l Doom is replaced by nothing else than a knife or a stick. |
Awesome! The atmosphere and graphics, the flashlight lighting in the darkness, everything is exactly the same as in Silent Hill
Will definitely check out this series
Call Of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of The Earth was a great game. It was flawed, but had some great scares and atmosphere nevertheless. Though you'd probably have to download it at this point.
It doesn't count as survival horror at all, but if you've never played Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, do so immediately. Fucking astounding game.
I've been playing Clive Barker's Jericho lately and it's really neat so far. Unfortunately, it's more on the shooter side of games, but it's cool - there's zombies and horrible Barker-esque creatures all over, and you are a part of some sort of occult special forces unit. I know, how uninspired. But it's about as entertaining as the original F.E.A.R. I'd say, which means it's worth a try.
It really is too bad that most horror-themed games are first-person, but I think that's an aspect sort of similar to the original Resident Evils in that a sort of 'fixed' perspective is slightly scarier due to the fact that your vision is going to be more limited. I dunno.
One thing I have noticed about good horror games though, is that they always go really fast for me. It's likely because I rush through them because they're scary though. Ravenholm, for example, is always a fucking race.

I'd be more than happy to dig up some gameplay videos for you, but I am at work for the next 9 hours and all games/video sites are blocked. :/
And my Silent Hill experience is quite minimal. I remember playing the first one and that it was really pretty frightening, but I recall there being a fixed, 3rd person perspective... it has been years though, so maybe I have it all wrong. Though I wouldn't put it past them to give you camera options for the express purpose of not using them.
Seems more tense that you would in fact be afraid to see all that you can at all times, and you know how those guys like to play psychological games within their games.
If I were home, I'd go visit 4chan's /x/ (Paranormal) board. I promise you will find some great recommendations there - those people never turn their fucking lights on.
Fatal Frame 2 + 3 = excellent horror games..scarier than Silent Hill IMO.
Yeah, so I guess none of my recommendations were even survival-horror.

I only played 15 minutes of Fatal Frame and had to turn it off. It's that good.
Holy shit! Fatal Frame looks better than anything I've ever imagined. Nice work with the camera too, I like how the angle is sort of fixed, but still seems to move a bit around too.
I was worried that it's either an Xbox or Nintendo exclusive, or for some other platform that I don't own..
The first and second games in the series were released for the PS2 and Xbox. The third game is only available for PS2, and the fourth game has been released exclusively for the Wii.
But reading this made me a happy, happy man
PS2 means that I can play the first three in order without any hassle, and I can probably (hopefully) find them at a very decent price.
More stuff like this please!
Fuck, yeah, Fatal Frame was the series I was trying to remember.
Too bad there really aren't any more though...

aha! I forgot about Siren..

Add that to your list after you finish the Fatal Frame series. Scary game with horrible B-movie voice acting, just like the original Resident Evil.
F.E.A.R. made me shit my pants quite a few times. But I really didn't like the gameplay itself. They should make a game that focuses solely on the horror aspects, cause I think they have it down pat.
