best vacation spots in the caribbean?

OK, so me and the man were going to book a trip to Mexico, but now with all the advisories against US citizens travelling there, we may choose another destination.

any suggestions?

we are basically looking for gorgeous beaches and a decent nightlife. We dont really want one of those remote, uber-quiet places!

thanks!!

go to aruba. it is a very nice island.

you can also go to barbados, st thomas and bahamas.

bahamas would probably have the best night life and the atlantis hotel is amazing!

Haha I keep telling you that I will go with you!! Haha! Just pay for the flight, hotel, and drinks and I'm there!! Hahaha!

And just because I was in toronto a few years, doesn't make me a bonafide canadian I'm and american! Check the profile....I'm simply and "honourary" torontonian via my long time spent there

Posted by coolestrl on Jun-11-2009 02:54:

Dubai would be awesome. I suggest you go there with your Canadian, I mean American passport.

I haven't been following the swine flu news lately. Is it still a big issue down there?

I was down in Mexico over X-mas and had such a sick time. Great beaches / activities, and some great nightlife options.

Posted by jmauro on Jun-11-2009 03:39:

There might even be specials, hell drinks might even be free down there considering no one is going down there. It seems as though the swine flu seems to be more of a problem in China. Holding up Mayor Ray Nagin for three days, they dont play over there.

just go to mexico! it's dirt cheap atm, and the chances of getting anything are very low. Moreover, you're young and healthy. even if you get the flu it wouldn't be any worse than the normal flu. looking at the big picture, something like 200 peeps have died from the swine flu, and tens or hundreds of thousands die from the seasonal flu every year. after taking a step back to look at the big picture, the swine flu is nothing more than the flu with a cute name.

I've only heard negative things about Dubai and DR. Go to one of the St.'s. If you want the true tropical experience you can get one of those luxury hotels built on the side of the moutain with open walls and shit so you're part of the jungle.

Yeah St.Thomas or St.John....so beautiful there, and I'm sure you can find stuff to do at night there.

St. Lucia too. The landscapes there are insane.

go to st croix sweetie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i go- well, used to go every year its amazing and DIRT cheap and just the best place ever. still part of the US too, and they LOVE STATIES!! they get so excited when people from NYC come too. We went the first time- first time for me- right after 911 and they threw us a HUGE PARTY once they realized where we were from they all loved us so much and kept hugging us saying how badly they felt for the whole country but more so for people who lived near by!

On turkey day they have a big parade and big party throughout the island!!

i can go on an on...pm me or call me!! hahah

They have an island live streaming web cam which is so much fun- when i go down there i go to the cam and my parents go to the pc to watch and we call each other on our cells. i know- were dorks! hahahah

http://www.gotostcroix.com/live/harborcam.php

this one is on christeanstead- the toristy side, where the great restaurants and shops are as well as ferry's to other islands like St John, ect

Fredrickstead- the side where most of the Cruzan people live, is FABULOUS! The college is there (I actually almost moved there and went to school there, thats how AMAZING this place is) as well as a little rain forest! Which is so much fun to go to !

You can rent a car and just drive yourself around- there are the comforts of home too, radio shack, Kmart, and mcdonalds...hahahha as well as record town which is fun bc they have some great stuff you cant find near us.

everyone there is AMAZING, ive made many friends and kept them and I truly am obsessed with this island, its cultures and the massive amount of beauty it holds.

I can not stress enough that you must concider this as your desitantion. as i said, pm or call me i have ALL the info you need on hotels, ect and you can look at about 800 a person round trip flight, hotel, car and pretty much everything but your food-0 which is not too pricey down there

Posted by hellosam on Jun-11-2009 14:07:

ohhhh and....the best bar ever...LITERALLY in the entire WORLD.

changes in latitude. on fredrickstead side, ON THE BEACH near the pier where the cruise ships dock.

beautiful plain simple- which carribean is colorful and fun!

i went there, my first day the first time i went (my bf took me, as his father owns a house on st croix). we drive upo, park accross the street and walk up to this all outside beach bar.

Jason tells me i need to try a drink call the "pain killer" so i order.

she asks me "for here...or to go?"

????/ huh? i look at jason...who immediatly smiles and explains that the large cup holder that looks like it was added completely after market in our rental is because you can drink and drive here in st croix...so....do you want to drink here on the beach at the bar, or take it to go in your nice HUGE styrofoam cup?

love it. the island had me at "...to go?"

lol I work in a nyc alternative school. Quite frankly I am more concerned with getting the flu here than in mexico. I was more referring to all of the violence/drugwars and kidnapping of US citizens for ransom. not like its a HUGE concern, (chances are unlikely) but there have been a LOT of reports on advisories of tourists going there.

LOL @ orbitz.com: the other day I went on there and there was a special "promising a FLU-FREE vacation!!" At least they are upfront!!! And jerz you are right, there are great specials right now!

Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone!! I will certainly take them all into consideratoin (except Dubai which has nothing to do with the caribbean and is uber expensive!! hahaaha!)

ooh sam I never thought about going there!!! I was looking into Saint Maarten/sint martin...... but I will look at St. Croix too!

my friend from grad school went there and hated it. She has been to a lot of places in the caribbean and said it was her worst trip yet. I thought she was exaggerating until her mother was telling me how her driver tried to kidnap them and they had to jump out of the car when it stopped near a "guard" (as they described him). scaryyyyyy!!!!!

I agree !!! just go to Mexico.

I think the Mexican Government has this thing now that if u go there and get the swine flu they will pay for all your vacation expenses They r doing it to promote tourism since it dropped drastically lately.

definitely...of all the ST's i like croix the best...cheaper and bigger than John so theres MUCH more to do. I have friends who live in st john too- i grew up with them...it keeps pulling them back, but honestly its boring! hahaha

that doesn't apply to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cabo, Acapulco, etc... Tourist areas in Mexico are VERY safe. I felt as safe in mexico as i do almost anywhere in the city.

if you are truly confident in this statement, then maybe I will not have to change my plans LOL. I really really wanna stick with my original plans, but I keep getting the "omg you are going to mexico???" statement everytime I mention it to someone.....

St. Barts..though Ladera Resort in St. Lucia was the best spot on earth for me.
