Goa & Psytrance

Your thoughts on the genre?

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Jun-11-2009 19:29:

I like it, mostly.

Some of it gets goofy and samey, but there's a lot of good stuff as well.

first psy set I ever heard was from j://digital, and I gotta same I've been hooked ever since.

Posted by Subtle on Jun-11-2009 19:49:

So much great stuff, so much sounding the same... a lot of digging needs to be done.

Posted by Matazaron on Jun-11-2009 19:52:

I agree, there is a lot of great stuff. This is probably my favorite Goa song. Great for dancing to also, and thats all I really care about

I love this type of Goa Trance, melodic without being too trippy.

Posted by RebeL9 on Jun-11-2009 20:06:

I like. Even though I still prefer the mid 90s stuff from Man With No Name, Shakta, Transwave, Etnica, Astral Projection, Prana, Blue Planet Corporation etc.

Some good stuff, lots of shit stuff.

E.G., Biocandy is just plain awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3fGWh5vrWc

early stuff was awesome. it could be mixed with both trance and techno without people knowing the difference. now its 150bpm fullon cheese stuff with all the same crap going on. just like trance. and techno. and house always been like that. what the hell happened?

Although I not a huge Goa fan, I also do like some mid 90's Goa stuff. e.g.

Man With No Name - Floor-Essence (Dayglo Mix)

Marmion - Schneberg (Man With No Name Remix)

Question: do you guys then also like the harder hardtrance /acid stuff like this one (one of my favs)?

Formic Acid - Eternia

Too many names to remember or I'm just getting old....

Nostrum - Brainchild of course.

Will check the other too, thanks.

I loved Alien Factory back then, a bit more melody in hardtrance Alien Factory - Tomorrow

Psy trance and progressive psy trance is my favourite genre - it's simply brilliant!

However, I like very little of what I hear - the vast majority of psy trance is pretentious, cheesy and soul-less - to a much greater extent than anything I have ever heard on ASOT etc.

Unfortunately, I've never been to a psy trance party that played anything other than the god awful shit i'm moaning about either, which has left me in no mans land in terms of clubbing. Still gutted about this!

I don't listen to a whole lot of Goa or Psy, but I do enjoy listening to the slower and more "chill" goa/psy.

I recently discovered some Khetzal stuff, and like it a lot.
Especially Khetzal - Listening Winds:

Blame the fucking israelis.

As far as modern psytrance goes one of my favorite producers is Prometheus. Both his albums are good.

Progressive Psy-Trance & non generic 144BPM full-on stuff is good, like Human Blue, Vibrasphere, John 00 Fleming, and mostly everything on Twisted Records

Full on's at 145bpm allmost exclusively :P

I got into psy with dj eccentric's psycho therapy. I got into progpsy ey and morning psy stuff for a while, and then got into more experimental full on, and then into oldschool goa stuff. Nowdays I've been listening to a lot of darkpsy/forest psy and a bit of goa as well.

However, I must say, full on or not, still love some xerox stuff. The stuff that was actually on the full on compilations doesn't seem too bad. It's just post 2001 really I guess.

I'm really not that impressed with suntrip records, I mean its quite good and everything but, the real amazing goa was artists like psychaos and the infinity project and doof. As well as tracks like astral projection-people can fly. Just haven't heard anything that comes close, maybe e-mantra -voyager II. The real psy is in the darkness, and some darkpsy really seems to be carrying that mood and magic these days.

This track was my favorite from the Opus Iridium compilation, especially the first 5 minutes! E-Mantra as an artist is also good, check his Telluric Waves, Trans Neptunian Objects etc. that were released these months.

Anyway the genres are good if you dig enough. 90s goa trance is still better than the new one but a lot of these new artists are also coming with great ideas (like E-Mantra).

John 00 Fleming & Christopher Lawrence play some good progressive psy trance if that's what you are after. They did a mix comp together a while back, think it was called Global Trance Grooves, which is also John's radio show if I'm not wrong. Worth checking out anyway, good stuff.
