Different types of Electronic music.

I'm not only new to this forum but also new to electronic music. Now, I have a few questions about the different types of music. First of all, there are so many types (trance, goa, electro, house, etc...), so is there a name that just covers them all? I usually just say Techno if I'm not referring to a specific one. Is this correct or not? Also, with the many types of electronic music there are, what exactly is the deffinition of each one. I noticed that on Youtube, if someone posts a song and calls it trance, sometimes people will comment very snappy things like, "This is not trance! It's Progressive Psytrance!). Why do some people get really touchy when others get it wrong? Is it that important? So what do they all mean anyway? I know basically what trance is and I think it is my favorite type of music. But what's the difference between that and Progressive Trance, or Goa, or all the rest? This is really confusing to me and it drives me crazy! Btw, my favorite djs are Cosmic Gate, Tiesto, Rank 1, and Darude. So what type of music do they mostly do?

Electronic music, or EDM (electronic dance music).

No, because techno is a specific subgenre of electronic music. Very different from trance.

Forget anything ever written in youtube comments, it's the biggest pile of retarded shit in the internet.

http://techno.org/electronic-music-guide/

This is a generic guide to all the differences. There's some inside jokes and sarcastic remarks around, but it's a good starting point.

You can call it trance, uplifting trance, epic trance, dutch trance, anthem trance, melodic trance. I call it shit, but then again I'm a bitter asshole.

Thanks guys! Lots of info on that site! Very helpful! Wow! I really like the song examples for Ibiza Trance! I'm going to have to look up some of those artists. So if electronic music is the correct term to cover it all, is that what I should say when someone asks me what kind of music I listen to? I mean, if I said trance, first of all that wouldn't be incorrect because it's not the only type of electronic music I like, and second of all, they would be like since I live in the U.S. and unlike Europe, most people have never heard of Trance or really anything but techno. But if I say "Oh, I like electronic music.", that's kinda weird sounding and they will probably have the same reaction of. But if that's what it's called, I guess that's what I'll say from now on.

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Jun-12-2009 01:11:

You can just say, "Dance music" and most people will understand what you mean.

Or "doof doof doof music" maybe.

Or you can sing Tiesto - Traffic to them.

DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DA DUN

If you want to be 100% correct, just say "electronic music".

When they ask you "You mean like techno?" afterwards, you can either clarify with specific terminology ("Yes, but this sound is actually techno, whereas I prefer trance, which sounds like this; also I kind of like jungle, but not..." and so on) and hopelessly confuse them until they don't care anymore, or say "Yes" and leave it at that.

I can tell you have something against Tiesto. Why? Just not your style? What do you like? I don't see how someone can listen to this and not think it's awsome. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZmE3fUKU5U

Because I'm more into these random kinds of shit nowadays:

Which is pretty far away from Tiesto.

You won't find many Tiesto fans around here, most folks around here are ex-tranceaddicts rather than tranceaddicts.

You mean beyond the over-the-top spectacle for a guy playing records and the fact Tiesto's version of Adagio For Strings was nothing more than a gratuitous style-bite of Corsten's version of a few years prior?

You should save this comment and then read it again in 3-4 years.

Because some of us have been listening to EDM for over 10 years and have already been exposed to much better types/genres of EDM. Pretty much everyone started listening to Tiesto/Armin/PvD which were actually good back in the day but have only went deeper and deeper down the shitter.

When I first started coming here I was a huge Oakie/Tiesto/Armin/PvD/Ferry fanboy and couldn't believe that people on a site called "Tranceaddict" would talk so much shit about them. I actually thought to myself the exact same thing you posted: "How can someone who is supposed to like Electronic Music hate these guys so much and not think it's the most awesome thing on the planet?".

Eventually I began to listen to other DJs like Desyn Masiello, Rowan Blades, Luke Fair, Hernan Cattaneo, James Holden, Sander Kleinenberg, Nic Fanciulli and others and realized how much I had been missing out. I have expanded myself to other subgenres/genres like Tech House, and Deep House and Techno and I really don't listen to Trance anymore. I just find 99% of it to be the same poppy, cheesy shit with super long breakdowns, farty basslines, and female vocals suited for 16 year olds. It just doesn't do anything for me anymore.

You would do yourself a favor if you started to expand yourself right now and save yourself a couple of years of shitty music.

Besides the set that Adam recommended, I urge you to check out this mix.

(Yes, I'm whoring this shit again, LOL)

The people listed there probably play music closer to trance than any of that gash you call trance these days.

Take your own advice and fuck off to trance.nu.

Doesnt matter what it is, the normal human in 99% of modern society will call it techno. There's basically 2 types of music in the club world ... hip hop, and ... not hip hop. real, actual "music" and wordless music.

I used to be very accurate in my abilities to classify dance music into any of 30 different genres and subgenres during conversations at parties. then i got a life. i suggest you keep your life, dont go to the dark side.

its the same as people that get upset at other people that spell the word "more" as "moar" or other words misspelled not because its less characters but because they just feel like spelling it that way. there is a balance in the world that keeps things running smoothly. for example in the linguistic world, on one side you have people that want to shake things up a bit and creatively change language with slang terms, on the other side you have the A type personalities that police things and make sure language is set in stone. eventually when enough people speak the slang term or new word it eventually gets voted into the dictionary. if there was no policing going the language would develop too quickly new words, phrases, and rules and you end up with a clusterfuck of gibberish with standards that are not common to all so no one knows what the hell anyone is saying anymore.

genre definitions are the same thing, makes it easier for people to know what the hell we're talking about. i suggest just doing the ishkur guide or wiki on the genres listed on beatport or something and not trying to be a genre expert, and when someone gets pissed at you for claiming something the wrong genre, just smile with the thought that they have no life and you do.

*sigh*

A phrase comes to mind:

"Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity".

My point was that I, like 99.9% of all who post here started listening to Trance. However, after being exposed to other forms of EDM I enjoyed much more, I moved away from it. When all you hear is the trance that Armin, Tiesto, PvD, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, etc. you tend to think that you're listening to the best shit in the universe.

You can just call it "dance music," which is more accurate and will still get your meaning across.
