Anybody follow cricket here?

i bet some of u aussies and brits do. anyone following the 20/20 worldcup?

Posted by Damerchi on Jun-13-2009 18:34:

i have tried to follow, but the highlights are about it for me. Way more skill in the batting is required than meatheads in baseball.

India needs to win against both England and South Africa I guess, to advance into the next round. We lost to the West Indies yesterday.

Posted by Damerchi on Jun-13-2009 18:47:

seeing the other posters in this thread, I'll leave you with a PAKISTAN ZINDABAD!

yes, I do

right now, it's south africas to lose. they've got the best lineup and most consistency. India are hot and cold, Pakistan even more so. West Indies fall into that bracket too. New Zealand are solid if unspectacular, the irish are there and did well to qualify at the expense of bangladesh but have no chance of anything else. England have got a serious case of media-scurvy. Too many jerks around and we've not picked the best squad. Aside from that, Sri Lanka look good too.

I'd be very surprised if the final was anything other than SA vs Sri Lanka right now, but that can quickly change in this shorter form of the game.

We must beat india and the windies to qualify now, so let's get in there.

heres the thing i have been really out of touch with cricket for over 5 years, and i absolutely love cricket, but i have no idea whats goin on at the moment with this 20/20 shit, those 50 over games were amazing, anyways hows the scene rite now? im tryin to get back into the game, last i remm Aussie's were the unbeatables, South Africa was my fav team but unfortunately they never won the world cup, and India was always on a winning or a losing streak. I have no idea how 20/20 works except for i know its just 20 overs, and is the regular world cup and 50 over games still around? are gibbis, pollock, rhodes, gilchrist, tendulkar still around?

Ian u a aussie or SA?

Gibbs & Sacchin are still playing. Rhodes is long gone, pollock about 3 years ago and gilchrist is only playing in the IPL (indian premier league) which is where the money is now.

modern greats (of all forms of the game)

Pietersen (England)
Jayawardene & Sangakkara (Sri Lanka)
De Villiers Steyn, Smith (South Africa)
Chanderpaul (he's 34 now though) & Bravo (West Indies)
Dhoni, Yuvraj, Sacchin (India)
tbh most of the best aussies are now gone. from their unbeatable side they've lost gilchrist, hayden, warne, mcgrath, macgill, martyn and Brett Lee is a shadow of his former self. Ponting is still going but close to the end of his career also.

That's the cricket equivalent of the premier league. Any professional cricketer can play in the Indian Premier League provided his cricket board lets him play. Pakistan didn't allow its players to participate in the 2009 edition.

I haven't seen SAf play this tournament yet, but I reckon Sri Lanka are also looking very strong to take it.

Having said that, I can't get into 20/20. I've tried, and as much as I love cricket it just doesn't do it for me.

and Langer and Gillespie.

Didn't certain nations have some beef with players in the IPL, banning them from international competitions if they took part?

Posted by Trance Nutter on Jun-14-2009 07:04:

That was the Indian Cricket League which was not sanctioned by the ICC.

IPL is not the same as the Indian Cricket League.

yeah, dont get me wrong, I even used to play ball as a kid, and ofcourse it takes form to drive a ball 400 feet. Just trying to raise some pro-cricket sentiment hehe. Comparing the batting specifically however, I do think that baseball is more one dimensional than cricket. To open yourself up to take a full swing in cricket is very risky thing to do, and the 360 versus 90 degrees of hitting space allows for more possibilities. But then again, you got elements strategic bunts and gaps for base hits in baseball as well, plus strategic baserunning.

its high on entertainment quotient as well. Watch Yuraj Singh whack 6 sixes (home run equivalent for you yankees ) in one over against England...

Holy shit thats the awesomest thing i have seen all day, they must have banned the bowler from the team haha, he made 50 runs it 12 fucking balls wow, does t20 and regular ODI's share the same records? Ravi shastri still sucks at commentary haha.

thanx for helping me update guys

it didn't really but the ICL is pretty much dead now after the ICC and BCCI flexed their muscles and allowed an 'amnesty' to cricketers who left it. the BCCI are dickheads though and the ICC are pandering to every whimper. There was a tv dispute in india and one channel which got messed around began their own league (icl) then the IPL happened. In that league, theres only allowed to be 4 non indian players in your side at any time.

20/20 itself is simple, it's aimed at people who dont think they have the time to watch a 50 overs match. Matches can be held after work hours etc. I don't like the indian thing of tarting it up that they/the south africans used and now its come here, stupid dancers & antics etc detracting from the game itself.
