Pre-Recording BPM's

Is pre recording your entire CD collection to the same bpm, e.g. 138, considered cheating or just using your initiative. And also do the top DJ's do this??

I don't see the problem personally, because the main thing is that the mixing is good and the crowd enjoy the tracks that are being played. Also you can still slow down and speed up the set, just need to change the pitch of both decks so that theu are exactly the same.

I've heard that Eddie Halliwell does this, not sure if it's true or not.

Maybe you could pre-record the mixes while you're at it.

Although I would never do this cos I get such a kick out of beatmatching, in essence it's no different from warping a track in Ableton.

Well I for one wouldn't even be able to do this, my 1210's pitches are slightly different, i'd still have to fiddle around with the pitches to get them bang on.

I suppose on the cdj's you could just look and see what each decks pitch is on.

(then again i do use Traktor, and could have a wee look on that, but i never really pay attention to it or the phase meters)

i swear that Bad Boy Bill has his cds BPM-ed. that guy never touches the pitch slider at all. same thing with Morrillo. never touches the pitch

this will take away the ability to use tempo shifts to add or reduce energy to a set. Beatmatching is not that hard, stop finding ways to be a bad dj. sets that stay at the same tempo for 5 hours are boring as fuck.

A lot of people do that and no it won't take away your ability to do bpm shifts or make you a bad DJ.

ps even when you do this in ableton, there is a noticable drop in the sound quality of the track.

I'm too lazy to actually do it, but I'm pretty sure you can still do bpm shifts. It is just easier for me take the few seconds to manually beatmatch.

it is so easy to beatmatch with cdjs, that you can have the track pretty much beatmatched before you even hit the cue button and just make any minor adjustment after.

i am sick of people thinking it is hard

I think this is because most house tracks are at 128BPM so its pretty straight forward and... a quick tip for beginners here :

If you're playing a song at 128BPM and the song you'd like to bring in is at 127BPM you'll be looking around +0.7 on your pitch slider. For a track at 129BPM try -0.7 on your pitch slider.IMO beat-matching house is extremely easy.. but this is only one area when it comes to mixing well.

you think very wrong.

How would you even do that anyways, change all your bpms the same for every song...? I only see you being able to do that in Ableton no...?

there is plenty of software out there for that, with ableton you seem to lose less quality but you still lose quite a bit.

cdj is easier than ableton because you don't have to do that gay warping thing.

the only reason to do this is if you cant beatmatch. if you cant beatmatch, you have no place doing a set in front of paying customers.

I know an assload of working DJs who all burn their CDs at the same bpm.

I don't really understand why you would, but I guess you could and I wouldn't really care either way.

Depend how you like to mix.

If you like to play song alone, like 6 min of song alone for a 8 min song, then you can still beatmatch yourself.
If you want to do 2-3 min mixing with 2 songs, with 6 min song, using effect, scratch etc, get your song at same bpm if you are not fast at beatmatching could be a good thing for you.

Like it was said before, if you have a track at 128.00, you need to put it ~ +0,81 to get it at 129.00 (i figured this out after some weeks of using serato).

People which says that beatmatching is the essence of mix didnt understand what mixing is. Beatmatching is shit, waste of time. The important thing is how people like your music, not how you do it.
But this is an important step of learning how to mix, cause you are training your ears.
