Domain name reg, hint and tips welcome.
Thinking of registering a domain name but want to be fully protected and retain ownership of it, obviously cheapest is best.
Just find a reputable registrar and you should be fine. If you are looking at a country top-level domain name, eg: .fm .me, etc you can try to find their official registrar and use them.
Go-daddy, as much as I hate their advertising and look offers a lot of domains for sale. The main top levels, .com, .net, and .org can be had from pretty much thousands of registrars... I have a few in a couple different places.
All in all I probably own about 15-20 domains.... 
Its kind of addicting too once you start, thinking up cool hacks using the top level domains like .es, .to, .de and .me.

not sure if its the cheapest but they are legit
You need think of a domain that is quite unique and doesn't have many search results in Google.

Got www.seethetell.co.uk (poker term, .com was taken) not sure what I'll do with it. And another one but I'm keeping that under wraps, the name gives away the business idea.

pay less than $10 for it, lock it, and set it to auto renew.
just make sure each year the account and domain contact info is accurate, along with credit card on file.
