Strawberries aren't what they used to be :(

They used to be all plump and small and red and bursting with flavor and now they're all huge and hard and flavorless/sour.

I blame california

The strawberries here are delicious, just like they always have been.

buy local.

i had some amazing ones from upstate NY last weekend.

Posted by Ian on Jun-25-2009 22:43:

I went and picked my own last week. 80pence a lb in weight (454grams for you new people) and the best quality ever. So brilliant.

I do however agree, I won't buy many varieties because of their poor quality in taste/texture/value. Look for elsanta, sonata & ava

yeah ive been eating some good strawberries too

now if you want to complain about produce, the tomatoes i've had in the USA pale in comparison to those i've had in italy. i don't even like to eat tomatoes here in the states, but when i am in Italy they are like candy to me.

the one thing my brother is missing from the UK is good berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, redcurrants, he says just aren't the same.

I bet that goes for mushrooms too

Truth is we do have some good local strawberries, but damn they're considerably more expensive than the imported ones

Why blame california? the strawberries here are awesome. blame your local market for buying shit strawberries!

Posted by Frenchie on Jun-25-2009 23:52:

I blame California too. The Strawberries I buy in Toronto, if I don't go to the market, are HUGE and not as flavorful. And they come from California and are probably grown in some green house and pumped with steroids.

Posted by Adam420 on Jun-25-2009 23:52:

I didn't know they grow strawberries in Syria!!

Posted by shortyspice on Jun-26-2009 00:13:

Most of the strawberries we eat are genetically modified... perhaps they are using different genes from before?

Our standard supermarket strawberries are shithouse. When I went to a strawberry farm a few months ago the strawberries there were freakin awesome tho.

There's a little fruit and veg shop just near where I buy groceries, and they have wicked fruit (and vegetables!). Way better than any of the stuff at the supermarket.

A lot of the farms got pretty fucked up in from the drought, but generally we have excellent food here.

Edit: Astro - Yeah, I think the ones I got last year from the little store were about 6 or 7 bucks a punnet. Sooooo good though, definitely worth it. Can't wait until they're in season again

OMG I officially hate you now

Posted by bas on Jun-26-2009 00:41:

California strawberries are pretty much the best ever. If you can't find good ones you're definitely doing it wrong.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jun-26-2009 00:47:

This is tenuously related at best, but I just want to gloat to the Internet about this motherfucker I ate yesterday:

That's Scone + Icing Sugar + Raspberry Jam + Cream + Fresh Strawberry. I believe the expression is "OM NOM NOM".

Posted by Adam420 on Jun-26-2009 00:49:

That looks like some good munchies

Love scones with confiture and cream
