I think American Beauty is different. IMO in American Beauty the guy actually loved his wife but got distracted by his midlife crisis and deluded himself into thinking that his family was dragging him down. If you remember, toward the end of the film he remembers her fondly.

yea but that's only becauase he was about to die and it was that whole "life flashing before your eyes" thing.

he caught her cheating on him when he was working at mr. smileys remember? so then after that, he was like, "no no...you don't get to tell me what to do ever again" lol

then he proceeded to smoke weed and weight train and do whatever the fuck he wanted while she bitched at him and made empty threats.

dont test me on that movie, i've seen it like 30 million times lol
