Photoshop - does anyone else not get it????

Right, I can do most things on a PC. I can build a website (just about), I can strip a PC or a laptop and put it together again, I can setup and install all versions of Windows, from 3.1x to Windows 7, including all servers from NT onwards.

I can do pretty much anything with a PC or server.

What I just can't get to grips with is Photoshop. I must have spent about 4 hours tonight, and I've only just about grasped the very basics, like layers and what not.

Would I be naive if I said I thought it wasn't very intuitive? In the 4 hours I've been frustratedly struggling with this undoubtedly hugely powerful program, I could have achieved what I've produced within 5 minutes in Paintbrush.

I've never felt so demoralised.

I've just grabbed a copy of PS CS4 for dummies, and I'm hoping it might shine a light.

i find video tutorials to be extremely helpful.

That actually helped, that ctrl-T to resize the selection will come in pretty handy!

All those things you described that you are good at in reality have little to nothing to do with working with PS.

Its like saying "I know how to work on cars, but every time I get in one I crash!"

Well if you have never actually driven a car... then there you go.

when i was going to the art institute i struggled with the program. got a C in that class.

i'm really not that great with in-depth, artsy/music programs at all. i need someone to babysit me and talk me through every step while i take notes.

honesty the best thing to do is familiarize yourself with all the tools and the different palettes. once you figure out where everything is and what it does, it's actually a very simple to use and intuitive program. you can't expect to pick it up in a few hours (unless you have previous experience with other graphics programs) but just scour the web for video and written tutorials. the more you play around with it the better you will get.

also, keyboard shortcuts are your friend and will save you so much time once you understand the program.

nah i think a better analogy would be like he would say :

"I know how a car works. I have built cars from scratch before. I know how to change my own oil, spark plugs, custom paint my hood, tint my windows, check the carborator, and the differences in european vs asian vs american cars. However, when someone asks me to take apart a car part, and give an explanation how each part in that car part is important to the car, I can't do that."

yea a big part of my problem with computer programs is the patience part that i lack. i'll spend like 30 minutes on it and get nowhere and be like, 'fuck i hate this program!' lol

i completely understand that frustration. it's happened to me anytime i've opened any program for music production.

i guess i lucked out because i played with all sorts of graphics programs as a kid. i remember getting to my Photoshop class in high school and instead of learning all the basics i was helping my teacher instruct all the other students in the class.

Photoshop was one of the few things I learned that I picked up on rather quickly. Love the shit out of that prog.

I have been using it since... Middle School probably, so 12 years I think...

I am not even a graphic artist by trade, but the profession that I am in it really helps to know it.

Tutorials on signature making actually helps alot too. Lots of them around.

photoshop is fun stuff. illustrator is what pisses me off.

the way i learned it was simply doing tutorial after tutorial. google is your best friend in this case, 'photoshop tutorials' will suffice as a search.

yeah, you'll usually only learn one cool manipulation at a time, but to get to that, you'll use most of the tools, & learn how they effect one another. over time it becomes second nature, & the tools that once seemed complicated turn out to be rather obvious. plus, there's a lot of different ways to do the exact same thing, it all depends on your preference.

Fuck photoshop...I can't get my head around Office 2007!

lol i was using photoshop when i was 5 years old. (father was a graphic designer)

just keep messing with it, and you'll get it

That. It use to be that PS was my favourite video game on my computer, as i would mess with it almost all the time when i was behind the copmputer (then 3ds max, softimage xsi...)

id love to get better at 3D modeling, but I get to UV unwrapping and I am like "AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"

I remember when I taught myself autocad. It is just like MS Piant but has 1000 options to draw about anything you want with things that at one point MSpaint don't got.

Bought two tutorial books. 1 Hour a day for each chapter along with the program for about a month or so. At some point I can't remember I had an interview and had to perform stuff on autocad that I tuaght myself(offset,trim,extend,so forth) and it all came back and that I think was key to getting that job.

Make sure when you do your time per day on it you don't forget how to use the previous stuff. Always start from scratch for any assigment/tutorial because repitition is key. Generally in any program I feel you will probably use 20% of the tools most of the time but the other 80 can be used whenever necessary and you will have seen them before.
