hard house

ok, so i spin mainly hard house. ive been listening to a bunch of hh sets, and i notice that the transistions aren't smooth like trance mixing. is slamming the fader and doing quick bass changes the norm for spinning hard house??? its frickin hard to make it a smooth transisition, like house or trance, but just wondering if you gots any tips.
chhers, caleb

Different genres of music usually will have very different mixing techniques. Just look at the difference between a trance club dj and a radio dj for rock/pop music. He doesn't "mix" he "cuts" the tracks. There is no transition on the radio the only job he has is to keep the music going. Don't get me wrong, knowing where to cut the tracks takes quite a bit of skill too, believe it or not. The styles can be very different from trance to hard house too. Hard house usually has a lot of break beats if I remember correctly, and so you can't beatmatch and transition. It involves a lot of cuts back and forth because there is not continuous 4/4 beat flow like there is in trance. My suggestion isn't to listen to other dj's HH sets, it to actually watch them live in action. This way you can see how intense the mixing skill some of these djs have, really are!

i mix mainly hard house as well, and it can be a pretty harsh mix, or it can be seamless
it all depends on the record and if you've got it phased or not

definitly listen to some HH DJ's... it's a fairly unique genre... HH tends to lend itself well to cut mixing, very quick transitions... it's hard to really mix it smoothly like trance...

then again why try? hardhouse is floor stomping stuff... and it gets the floor moving if you can quickly cut and piece together tracks and phrases.

dunno why so many people hate on hardhouse... it's fast, hard, and seems to be MUCH less mainstream than say trance or slowhouse... which make it quite appealing to me.

sometime in the near future i'll post a hardhouse set to download here... so you can see how badly i suck :P

i agree with everything you said mer, and once i get a cable so i can record to my comp, i'll also post a set.

Posted by MERiDiAN5i2 on Jun-24-2002 21:11:

right on... i'll have my domain up shortly so I can actually have a place to post stuff

hardhouse / nunrg is badass... i dont care what anyone says :P but i do love hardtrace too... fast stompin trance is phat and mixes really well into a HH set... so does nu nrg kinda stuff

down with slow boringass beats!!!!! I'm too ADHD for that club n dolphin sheit :P

john whiteman - can't beat the system
omfg best hard house track EVER.

i just picked up the newest cap'n tinrip rekkid and it is kickin'. lisa pin-up is also the shit. mer, you and me have like the exact same music interest. hard trance + hard house/nrg rox!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by MERiDiAN5i2 on Jun-25-2002 05:17:

yes... cant beat the system is one of my favs !

what's tinrib's new release? i'm still trying to get a feel for the last bunch of records i got... hehehe

ever check out www.bangingtunes.com ? if your looking for UK stuff that place kicks ass ! so much cheaper than buying it local... 4.50 pounds for most singles...

and yes it does sound like we have the same taste in music.. i am starting to like some stuff that's kinda different.. i dont know what the word for it would be, but it's like a blend of hard and progressive house, a little (5 bpm maybe) slower than hoover-style full-on hardhouse.

two examples would be satelite kids - funky nuts... and cortina - erection (les hemstock mix) -- both a little slow, but still hardhouse, kinda progressive/funky sounding.
need to find more of that kinda stuff

i'm still kinda green to spinning... only had my decks about 6 weeks, but i just secured 80 megs of unlimited bandwidth webspace... so i'll be posting a set more than likely this weekend... i want to start getting some opinions of how badly i suck or not

i'll put a link to it here on the board

I mixed hard house when i first started out. Its very easy to mix and its good for people starting out and wanting to go on to mix other genres that are harder to mix. A few hard house djs do a rough transition, but i find rough transitions are okay only if it happens a few times between certain tracks. Otherwise, try to mix for a smooth transition without any galloping beats. I remember when Anne Savage came here and her mixing was great, i didnt hear too many quick mixes. After 1 hour, hard house gets boring very quickly in my opinion.

Hard House Labels i like:
Tidy Trax
Stimulated Djs
Nucleuz

Hard House djs:
Anne Savage
Lisa Lashes
Tidy Boys
Signum
Stimulated Djs

i dunno i dont really listen to HH much anymore.
