"This Month in Techno/House" Returns (sorta)
So I just ripped this from the RA news feed.

I remember I used to check out Philip Sherburne's "This Month in Techno" articles until they stopped and I always had a love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with them. Now someone new is trying to start it back up and it reads surprisingly similarly to how I remember them: always name-dropping artists I've never heard of, always championing a sub-genre I'm pretty sure doesn't exist (I guess it's 'funky' this month), and then just when I think I can't read anymore, it ends up recommending a bunch of legitimately good tracks that don't seem to have anything to do with all the preceding text.
Anyone else ever check these out?

Yeah, I live in the UK and I always try to keep up with the most obnoxious trend-hyping media sources and I've never heard of "funky". It's pretty clear we're not talking about funky house in the sense I know it.

These kinds of columns amaze me.
I spend many hours trawling (4+ on Friday) for decent new psy-trance and it's really tough to come up with rookie names who are making quality stuff. Perhaps it's just because house/techno have a larger producer base, but I am astounded that people can actually come up with 10 brand new, decent tracks from completely unknown producers every week. They must just spend all day surfing. (I am referring to Sherburne here, I used to read his stuff a bit).
Also, that was an interesting article. Thanks for posting. It was insightful and quite accurate, I thought. It was only about two hours ago that I became aware of the dubstep/techno fusion happening at the moment, through endyo's set Sutures in the DJ section.

"Funky house" is such a rubbish name for it, but it nevertheless describes a sort of hybrid between house and UK garage that is popular in the UK these days:
I quite like it as long as it stays in the darker and grime-influenced realms, as it is so fun and danceable. However, true to UK Garage-form, it has also spawned a legion of commercial numbers trying too hard to be "sexy", which ultimately ended up in the charts.

Oh, In terms of something not actually existing, clearly I was referring to the name and not the music itself. I'd never heard someone in normal conversation refer to Funky as a distinct genre...just like I had never heard (and still haven't) heard someone say, "I just finished listening to a great set of ketamine house." But that one was always turning up in older columns like it was something people really called it. I'd rather just say house or techno or dubstep and get on with it is all.
