Exclamation Newsflash: Black Hole vs Umek

Black Hole vs. Umek

Recently Black Hole Recordings has gained the world wide rights of DJ UMEK'S techno banger called "Gatex". Being on Tisto's playlist for months now he decided that the track needed a slammin' remix, and signed the track for his very own label "Magik Muzik". New mixes of the track from DJ Tisto and DJ Montana are to be expected this summer. So stay tuned for the new mixes of this techno monster.

That will be a tough challenge for both Tisto and Montana IMO, to remix such an outstanding techno classic... glad though that Tisto is also recognizing the potential of genres other than trance.

What do you guys think? Will such a remix work?

I think that is logical. Umek made a remix for Black Hole (for Montana's latest single) and Tiesto likes Umek's stuff (eg.Oronazol).
But even though I was very surprised that this has happen.
Why? Well Umek doesn't like trance at all and he doesn't like Tiesto. He said once in an interview when he was asked if he would remix Tiesto he answered that he 'wouldn't ruin his reputation that he has gained in last years with a remix for Tiesto '. I was shocked by this statement and lost any respect for him as a person (he's great as a DJ, I must admit).

About the remix I think it will work, because Gatex has this great melody all throug the tune and I think that Tiesto will work on this....

I agree destroy a Umek tune like that.....

But maybe i am wrong about it.....Its just wait and see when its out....

Posted by flystyler on Jun-23-2002 18:50:

Heard this tune by tiesto and fergie lat night at gcsss.

Tiestos remix will probably just have bass added, something that i know a lot of people wanted from his livesets, and will get a full vinyl release now.

Also i know there is another remix that i havent heard. I must say tiestos version does sound better.

But this is just such an amazing tune

Posted by Sand Leaper on Jun-23-2002 19:32:

I must admit that this sounds kinda weird.I mean, techno producers are notorious for hating trance, since they are all about "keeping it underground" and all of that stuff.Umek is among the last producers that I would expect to have anything to do with trance at all.This...

he said that he:'wouldn't ruin his reputation that he has gained in last years with a remix for Tiesto'

and this..

..just confirms all of my statements above.(no pun intended, vermi)And now "Gatex" gets signed to Magik Muzik????Talk about an anti-climax.I guess that Umek needs the money. Can't think of any other reason that would make him change his opinion so dramatically.

As for the remixes,I think that a remix by Montana can work very well.I think Montana did a great job on "Theme From Concept",and with material like "Gatex",this can indeed be an interesting remix. As for Tiesto,I have no idea what his remix will sound like.I've never imagined Tiesto getting involved in techno produtionwise, but that just makes it more exciting to see the result.

This is also a delicious middle-finger to all the purists and genre fascists, which is always welcome if you ask me.

Why add bass when the lack of it is exactly what makes the track stand out?

Posted by Nell on Jun-24-2002 00:21:

you sure its magik music and not just black hole. magik muzik is a sub label of black hole as im sure you are aware, but i thought it was for tiesto's own music, hence why 653, urban train, lethal ind, and his album are the only tracks currently on it?! not arguening in anyway or disputing it, just wondering if the information is 100% accurate as im very interested. ill be chekcing it out either way.

EDIT - i guess your right, i just checked the webby, so i beleive it.
probably gettign on the MM label cos tiesto is remixing it himself?!?!

Smile

I first head umex - gatex when sven vath dropped it at the 2001 mayday
even then i knew it would be big.

Posted by verminator on Jun-24-2002 12:48:

it was big even before sven dropped it at mayday =p

I dunno, but i like both versions. I suppose the bas version just makes it better live, i dunno

Posted by verminator on Jun-24-2002 14:57:

hmms
there is something more going on between umek/blackhole

umek has done a remix of montana's "theme of concept", so its probably a part of a deal between both parts..

like.. i remix your stuff, you remix my stuff
+ money of course heh

anyways.. a tiesto mix.. or just letting blackhole getting involved with umek is disgusting enough..

such a commercial label releasing remixes of a classic underground techno track.. blh

its not right..
man i wish there were some rules that could have prevented this..

at least only a few of the real techno dj's do play gatex these days.. seems like tiesto is a bit late, as all the techno dj's had it in their playlist mostly in the 2nd and 3rd quarter of 2001, and some even in the 4th too.

maybe the techno dj's are also getting sick of tiesto playing one of the classics that has been blasting the dancefloors for over one year now? who knows..
at least i am....

its not really that he plays it that bother me, but the ppl that listens to tiesto play it and suddenly say: wow techno ro0xxx.. , and the next time you let them hear some real good underground shit from liebing.. its like.. wtf.. techno suxx.. only the techno tiesto plays is good shit.. techno is for lamers.. blah
smthin like that..

annyoing

either you like it or not..

Posted by Serp on Jun-24-2002 16:43:

maybe then the track tiesto spun live was his remix!

not much of a "remix" though if you ask me, i would call it a remake
but then again he could have easily mixed the beat into it live.

so let's just wait and see!

Posted by DJ MainFrame on Jun-24-2002 18:44:

i agree be openminded, let's wait and see, (actually listen )

Posted by Elyksir on Jun-24-2002 18:51:

Well techno isn't so UNDERGROUND as it used to be >>> Umek, Liebing, Vath, Cox.... are big stars nowadays as much as trance DJs.
It's all about $$$$$$$$$. UNDERGROUND is mainly the past fact and this talking about commercialism is a big bullshit IMO.

Umek is getting airplays, interviews in Playboy, his Torture Chamber was advertised all over Slovenia....etc
So PLEASE stop talking about 'commercial' Black Hole. Everything is commercial nowadays...

Posted by JMF [TrAcId] on Jun-24-2002 19:37:

I'm just a little gutted that it's gonna be remixed at all, and undoubtedly be made huge all across Europe. I Hold the track in reverence, that's all.

As long as someone like Jeff Mills is performing for peanuts at a small, alternative club such as "Doornroosje" in my hometown Nijmegen, where no hotel or dinner is arranged for him (in fact he had to eat at the local snack bar!) I'd say the underground feel is still alive and commercialism hasn't yet taken over the entire scene...

Well not the entire scene actually like not over entire trance scene also...
Since you've mentioned Mills he spun here two times and he was really bad- spinning these old detroit records without any enthusiasm and just to collect money ( yes, he received about 20000 euro !!! for a 2 hrs gig >>> some big peanuts dont you think )

This topic has gone way out of its meaning so... back to topic...

no gatex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no!!!!!!!!!
this track was made to get remixes by chris liebing hehe

DISGRACE

i find the fact that someone as commercial of tiesto, wanting to remix this masterpiece of a tune disturbing. Why of why has umek sold the rights to this tune to Majic music, could it be money, or he just wishes the further is carear, by letting a big name like tiesto bring him out into the open. GATEX belong on a label like kanzleramt or International Gigilo, not some cheesy trance label.

THE DOWNFALL OF TECHNO HAS BEGUN

you dont have to be a tranceaddict and like magik muzik to be on this forum LOL

that's the most ridicilous thing ive heard

its for all kinds of genres, and it doesnt matter what YOU think is commercial.. because.. its only an opinion.

i support tsunami one on this one, because all he says is true. its the fact

and its a !#"#"!"! shame that umek has done what his done...

Posted by Serp on Jun-25-2002 10:40:

there will always be an underground scene but the guy has probably tired of it and wants to get more recognition and a bit of extra cash wouldn't be bad either would it!

hell i don't blame him, you would have to be stupid to let up on an oppertunity like that, you shouldn't bag him for doing so.

Posted by verminator on Jun-25-2002 10:58:

an opportunity for ruining ur reputation...

im
id say he's 'stupid' that actually does something about it.. to grab that opportunity
and i dont believe he need cash, because he produces songs all the time, and he is playing all around the world..
