Teezdalien - Excess - July 2009

Hi All, been a little while since I've been able to post anything here. Only just had internet restored in my new place so in the meantime I've compiled a new mix.
Fully inspired by my new surroundings at the beach front, beginning with Tom Cosm's remix of Kiwi electronica legends Pitch Black, it moves into tech-house and prog with some definite nods to electro, minimal, dub and even tech-trance, closing with Dusty Kid's masterpiece 'America'. So it is a bit of mixed bag. A few of the mixes may have been drawn out a bit longer than I like but I don't think there's too much energy lost. Anyway some feedback from you would be great.

Yeah man, the mixes with Showdown are questionable. If I was to remove any tracks it would be first choice.
Thanks for taking time to listen.

Thought this was a pretty good set man. Got through all 4+ hours this morning

I thought it was very well mixed all the way through and that the flow and programming were top notch. Technically, there is really nothing to fault.

In regards to the music, I gotta say that some of it wasn't totally my cup of tea. This is obviously the part where my own personal tastes come in, and is in no way indicative of the quality of the set. I divided the mix into three parts:

-Start -> 2 Hours
-2 Hours -> 3 Hours
-3 Hours -> End

Reason for that is that I found the stlyes you played in those three parts to differ enough to notice. In the first part, I just couldn't help but feel as if a lot of the music was kind of....generic? I don't know, maybe because the tracks are older I had a hard time getting into it during that part.

Part 2 is where you really started to bang it out and that was by far my favorite. Really grooving vibes and some really cool sounds in there. Was definitely rocking to it at that point.

Part 3 kept the energy you had going before, but it got pretty trancy, which again is not toally my taste.

I hope you don't take this the wrong way. I though that technically this mix was spot on, and really it is amazing that you maintained such consistency after 4 hours of mixing. Jut from a personal taste point of view, like I said, a lot of it wasn't entirely my cup of tea.

Cheers mate

I took a listen to the mix the other day at work... completely straight through in one go (with the occasional bathroom break, lol). Many of my thoughts tend to echo Adam's in a way, except my personal tastes (and what parts I enjoyed) differ... I absolutely loved the first part, thought the songs picked were moody sounding and original.. made me curious as to where the mix would go next. Then the middle portion, where you went more of the tech/electro-house route, tended to drag for me (since it's not my favorite style), the songs being a bit indistinguishable and blending into one another. But the finish was great, and I definitely saw the progression out of the slump. I dug the proggy/trancy elements thrown in near the end, once again in contrast to Adam.

In all, building a 4 hour set seems like it would be a challenge, and there are bound to be a few slumps or songs that sound generic. The mixing was great and it was impressive how you were able to maintain consistency for 4 straight hours. I look forward to hearing more from you!

Thank you Adam and Mr Game for kind words and review.
I can fully understand what you guys are saying about your own taste preferences as I really have a broad taste in dance music and often my sets will reflect this.
This also kinda makes building a set a bit more challenging for me also as I try to make smooth transitions with tracks that may seem a little unorthodox to mix together. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don't. But from doing things this way I wouldn't expect someone to get into every track that I play in a set, but I kinda hope it appeals to a broader range of people.
Appreciate the feedback!
