Talking Learning Dutch...

I want to learn some Dutch. Since this forum's a Netherlands forum, I figured that to post this here, as most people in here speak Dutch and English (maybe minimally, but, they speak it!). I'm planning on going to The Netherlands sometime within the next 3 - 5 years and even though a lot of Dutch people speak English as well as their local language, a lot also don't. Also, advertisements, news, traffic signs, and other VERY local things are almost never in English (Or at least I heard).

Can someone put English pronunciations of Dutch words and phrases, as well as the original spellings of these words and phrases in a reply to this? I greatly thank you, whoever replies and helps me out!

Sorry, mijn nederlands is niet zo geweldig.

What does this cost?

Is there a coffeeshop in this neigbourhood?

Is there a good trancy party this weekend?

The Holland-Tranceaddict forum rules!

OKee, well we can learn you stuff but this way isn't correct.
I'm an intern at a school where we have people from other countries (a changing program). the best way to learn dutch is to 'hear' it cause the a, e, u, i and combination of both are spoken differ in englisch.
But okee here are some other thinks.

Try to order a book from amazon.com called "The Undutchables" It's full of extremely funny examples of the Dutch culture The foreign exchange students from my college all bought it and had some good fun

In my opinion it is almost impossible to learn a language by reading a selection of words/phrases. You need to get a grip on the grammar and pronouncuation of certain syllables.

Take a look at this site:
http://travlang.com/languages/

It was pretty helpful when I started teaching myself Swedish.

I know... Anyway, Great phrases everyone! Make sure you put more BASIC phrases in there too! Just put those others (like about the Trance party, UK TA, condoms, etc.) at the end. If I'm going there for the 1st time, I'm going to try to speak basic conversations with the Dutch people and if they know English, I'll continue the conversation from there IN English (simple English, though)! Keep'em coming! Thanks!

I was there before. It's nice... I want to get a CD-ROM or warez that has an environment that "puts you into the langauge of your choice's environment". That's the most helpful because it's like going over there when you're a kid and bi-lingal speakers might say "That's a ("car" but, in the native language)"...

Here's another one.. I don't know if you have a DVD player, and neither if region code 1 (US) DVD's include Dutch subtitles but watching movies is a very good way of learning certain words in daily behaviour. I am unsure though if Dutch subtitles are only included on region code 2 DVD's or also on region code 1.

Listening to webradio is also an option, but you can only do that once you've advanced to the point where you are able to understand the foreign language in it's natural pronouncuation.

Posted by TimeportE on Jun-25-2002 08:23:

still the best way is to take some kind of foreign class here.. my sister did the same in spain and she can speak and understand spanish quite well (at least that's what she says

the only thing you need to know about holland

-you get the weed in the coffeeshop (400 in amsterdam alone), asking for the 'menu'. one gram costs about 4-5 USD/5 euro
-the redlight district is behind damsquare (royal palace). its the savest place in amsterdam (ironicly) and a fuck/blow costs 50/25 euro
-smoking weed ot using drugs in holland isnt illegal, selling is

hehehe
