Thumbs up the 80's tracks that influenced your musical taste

So, I was thinking the other day. What really got me into electronic music (this happened to be trance back in late 90's)

I was a kid and would hear the following tracks in my Uncle's car when he was crusing through the twisting streets of South Shields, England (North East).

Many of the songs I have listed have synths, catchy beats and decent vocals. My theory is the melodic bits of these 80's songs probably got me into melodic trance.

Can you guys think of any that may have influenced your taste in music, 80's....dont want any 90's...

OMD - If you leave
New Order - True Faith
Duran Duran - Save a Prayer
Duran Duran - Come undone
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
AHA - Take on me
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams
Eurythmics - Here comes the rain again
Erasure - A little respect
Marillion - Kayleigh
Alphaville - Big in Japan

we can dance if we want to
we can leave your friends behind
because your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance
well they're no friends of mine

Ah, Enjoy the Silence is just barely 90's; release date was January 16th, 1990.

Not that I'll hold this against you, as I can't help but think of it as an 80's favorite, in addition to probably being the first track I ever really fell in love with.

I grew up on a steady diet Depeche Mode and Glam Metal.

Ultravox - Mr. X

Talk Talk - It's my Life (I hate Gewn Stefani for butchering this!)

Also anything by Tears for Fears.

I remember listening to these tunes as a kid and not really being aware how great they are. I guess they were forever embedded in my subconscious and have to this day shaped my taste in music

?!

The Police - Invisible Sun
The Police - Spirits In The Material World

Um... I can't think of much else. The 80s weren't all that influential in my musical upbringing since much of the rock my father would play was from the 70s. And I didn't strike my tastes out on my own until the 90s.

Well the guy has a narrow taste and likes to brag about that. That's not really surprising phenomenon, you can see it in every other thread on TA.

I dont have narrow taste.. i just hate the sound of the 80s. 90s is where its at for me.

I'm a bit young to have been influenced directly by the 80s. The indie-dance stuff of the period has definitely been a big influence on my tastes, though. Stuff such as:

New Order - Blue Monday
The Stone Roses - Fool's Gold

Can you describe the sound of 80's? You tell me that for example Kraftwerk's Electric Cafe sounds similar to Phuture's Acid Trax. Or that The Stone Roses sound similar To Gary Numan. What about Art Of Noise, post-Black Celebration Depeche Mode, Manuel Gttsching, Tangerine Dream... all have the same, dated sound?

I dont know all those artists.. i was seven years old when the 80s ended.
When i think 80s music, i think about what was most popular, what is still being played today. the typical synth pop, balad rock sound.
For me music was more interesting in the 90s with the indie/grunge rock, pop and dance music.

No love for thrash metal, industrial, or corporate country-rock?

This and some Depeche Mode is probably the only popular 80s music i like. Everything else, Chicago house, Detroit techno, industrial, underground disco and synth pop, indie rock, ambient, electro, dream pop, krautrock and even some new age is awesome.

So here, I fixed it for you.
