A question to Wii owners

How much do you actually play, and when did you buy it?

My fiance is coming to visit me, and she offered to bring me something from the land of the rising sun. She said she could bring me anything as long as it wasn't gigantic. She asked me whether I wanted an external hard disk, which I think is quite tempting, though I'm sure it would far exceed my needs (I hardly, if ever, download films/music). So I'm thinking of getting a Nintendo Wii. It costs 250 dollars in Japan, whereas it costs at least 1000 dollars here in Brazil. I've played it quite a few times, and I think it's very entertaining.

The thing is, I don't really play video games that much, and I don't even own a TV for that matter. But, I think it would be a nice opportunity to have some friends over and play during my free time, not to mention the fact that it would also be a good reason to buy a television. However, I'm wondering: how long does it take to get bored of a Wii? Did you use to play video games before getting it? And, no, I'm not interested in any other console, unless it's cheaper than the Wii.

Had one where I used to live.. used to always play it when friends came over... You can just pick it up and use it without having played any games before. It's a good non-gamers' console. I've even had it running at house parties before and people have jumped on.

PS - Try to get your hands on a Japanese game called "Cooking Mama".. it looks really shit but it's hilarious when you get into it..

I wouldnt bother, its going to be very short lived. Unless you have friends who enjoy coming over to play it all the time. I bought mine when it first came out, and now when I have it at my house, it collects dust. I lent it to a friend to play some games, and until Monster Hunter 3 comes out, I prolly dont care when he brings it back. Smash Bros. was awesome when a bunch of us TA's would try and play.

I have it... love the engrish in it... "It's okay momma wirr herp you", lol

I have my wii modded with a Wiikey. They can be softmodded now, so you no longer need a chip added like mine did. You have all the games available as torrents at your disposal.

The graphics are the same as my old classic xbox, so it's behind the 360 and ps3. But it's all around good fun, and the controllers make a game more interactive. It's a fun for everybody console, not just for gamers, so it's always good for entertaining.

It's good for casual gaming, but having a group of people is almost a must. It's pretty much a party console.

I picked one up last December, but haven't played it much recently (hardly play any games). All I have for it are Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Wii Sports. I also have mine modded, but only so it can play DVDs. I also occasionally use the browser.

You might also consider the availability of games, especially if it is a Japanese Wii.

That's why I'm thinking about it long and hard: I've got just one friend that owns a Wii, and he tells me that he does like to play by himself, but it's infinitely better to play with others. I've taken lots of friends to his house, as he's always up for a "Wii Party", as he calls it.

I don't really care that much about the graphics, so it's all good. As a matter of fact, this is the first time I considered buying a video game after I got my SNES in Nineteen-Ninety-something

By the way, if I can get the Wii soft-modded, it doesn't really matter if it is a Japanese Wii, does it?

the wiimote sucks the big one. still had a bunch of fun with it though. but yeah, id take a tiny, big-busted teen crammed into your fiancee's luggage over a wii.

i play more with the virtual console nowadays

the last good game i played for the wii was zelda: twilight princess

i would recommended it for virtual console only

Even though I'm sure one can fit a Japanese teen pretty much anywhere, I'm afraid that's not among the available choices

you can play NES, SNES, N64 and SEGA games with your wii, previous purchase and download; and most of them need the classic controller

Oooohhh.... now that's interesting

the wii is a pretty good investment. as mentioned earlier, it's a video game system for people who don't necessarily have to be into video games.

i enjoy a good match with super smash bros. brawl or mario kart & a room full of friends. if you drink, that'll spice it up! the way my friends play is that the winner has to drink.

over the course of the night, if a particular person always wins the booze will inhibit their playing, allowing others to win & eventually get good & drunk. then the trash-talking (friendly of course) & gaming really gets hilarious.

that's one big reason I bought mine. It's easy to use, lots of fun and there's different kinds of games. I had an original x-box and always found myself going back to my gamecube to play games, in the end giving it to my cousins cos I barely used it.

Good question. I can only assume so, as modding the Wii seems more popular on PAL systems than NTSC. Just look at the top 100 torents for Wii: http://thepiratebay.org/top/405 . You'll have an easier and faster time downloading games than I have.

Surprised nobody has mentioned it, but Warioware is a fun game when drunk.

It's basically 2 seconds of doing this random task with the wiimote (like pretending it's an elephant trunk and grabbing an apple) or jumping over some hurdle or something like that.

In general, silly fun. And to repeat, it's a fun party game. =) I remember playing wii bowling, take a drink for every pin you leave up after each frame.
