A Baffling Physics Question That Should Make You Think

The law of conservation of mass and energy states that matter cannot be created or destroyed in a system, only transferred. So, how did matter and energy get here in the first place? Is it infinite? Well, if it's infinite, and the universe had a beginning at the Big Bang, then WTF?

Posted by Sunsnail on Jul-20-2009 05:33:

No not really baffling.

Oh great, another religion thread.

its a conspiracy 9/11

Isn't the big bang theory supposed to be a cyclical thing? At some point, billions of years ago, all the energy and matter in the universe was sucked into something like a super-massive black hole, and then exploded, sending all the energy/matter outwards again.

it wouldn't surprise me if it's just a cycle.. we start with the big bang- expand, expand, galaxies are created, expand, expand- then the big crunch.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Crunch

what i always wonder is what is OUTSIDE our universe? dark matter? nothing?

Cool, the big crunch was what I meant Didn't realise it had a proper name

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Jul-20-2009 05:46:

It could by cyclic if the universe ever wants to collapse on itself again, which theoretically could never happen if the initial bang and outward expansion is too great. I don't know how that calculation is made, but I know now that the universe is not yielding in expansion, but still accelerating in growth. So either we haven't yet reached the point where the the gravitational pull of all the mass in the universe can cause it to "crunch" on itself, or the universe will just grow forever and ever.

In my opinion, I think some over ambitious fucks (probably pro obama)in the previous universe were fooling around with hydrogen and helium, and collapsed the universe into a big black hole where it then collapsed on itself into a singularity to the point of density where a big bang occurred. The proof of the previous universe was destroyed, and so are our clues to the existence of the first iteration of the universe.
And all the energy was condensed very tightly into the size of a nickel before exploding. So no, the energy was not lost or created. I think. I don't know. I'm a stuffed animal collector, not a terrorist.

and that's why I am against the LHC project. I'm glad they built a nice looking structure, but humans are fools and fools with power kill many. They overheated their magnets during the warm up, just as I predicted. And they will kill everyone, just as I predict.

Why couldn't it just be here all along? Nihil ex nihilo, after all.

your welcome

The universe is ever expanding at a faster rate (Red Shift). I think a crunch is out of the question.

and no, this isn't a religion thread..

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Jul-20-2009 05:51:

Like homer simpson said, think of the universe as a donut. You walk around the donut all day, but you will never reach the end. You can travel in all axis, but you will never have a beginning or an end. But if you want to escape the universe, all you have to do is come with me. Take my hand and fly away with me, Over mountain and sea, Far away from the pain to a place where we're all free. As we fly together, you and me, We will build a new world We'll believe in a love I know that we will be Together and free. Together, forever, Move on to an island across the sea

Hubble > Hawking

Posted by SuspicionVandit on Jul-20-2009 05:54:

i don't think hawking proposed the crunch.

Posted by yukii on Jul-20-2009 05:55:

me > hubble

& no, he didn't propose the crunch but he talks a lot about it

If the universe has a beginning, how could matter and energy have been here all along?

What if there was a black hole (or something similar) that was so large and so dense that it slowed the expansion, and eventually reversed it? Is something like that possible?

That's why the 'cyclical' theory makes more sense (to me anyway )

Posted by Sunsnail on Jul-20-2009 05:58:

1) The universe doesn't have to have a beginning
2) yukii's "outside the universe" shit. theres nothing "outside the universe". whatever it "outside" is part of it.
3) from a distance the gravity from a black hole behaves the same as a star of equal mass

okay, so if there was no beginning then youre saying there was no starting point?

it was a fucking hypothetical question, calm the fuck down pierre.

yes

That doesn't make sense. The gravity from a black hole is so great that even light can't escape from it. That isn't the case with a planet's gravity.

Or am I mistaken?
