Anyone had/been around one of these?
The durian fruit.
Taken from wikipedia,
"The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the aroma overpowering and offensive. The smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust. The odour has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia."
Must be really intense.
EDIT:
If this guy can't stomach it, it's got to be pretty bad.
Yeah, I tried some in high school, when I was studying Indonesian.
It's a fucking weird smell and taste alright. Really hard to describe. I didn't find it that bad, but some of the other kids in my class thought it was foul (and it made one chick puke
)
Watch Andrew Zimmermann or Anthony Bourdain eat that stuff. They both describe that shit pretty well.

(well Cactus once, but I don't think it's got a warning sign against eating it in public).

this is like the most produced fruit in my mom's home city. I tried it once but didn't really like it.
Durian candy is nice though.
BTW, the smell isn't horrible from what people here imagine it to smell like. It's just fruit and smells like a farm or a market place in a tropical climate.

Couldn't find the bourdain one, but I'd imagine (unless he's one of the people who falls in the category of tolerating/liking the taste/odor) he'd definitely be unable to eat any of it. |

i remember these as a child, my parents would buy these things and my god did they smell funny, i never ate them but judging from their distinctive odour i cant imagine they taste very pleasant.
I just bought a pair of these.

my mom loves to eat durian. she describes it as having a sweet smell and even better taste. i find it revolting.

Looks like he had the taste-buds for it, strange split of people in a really polar way. @TranceOwnsLol Yeah I know nothing of it and was curious when I saw that sign banning a fruit in a public area; not meaning to be ignorant of a culture at all @Sushi |
