CD burning issues (tearing noise on some burned CDs)
Hey,
It looked like the Gadgets/Tech forum was dead, so I wanted to post this here:
I'm having occasional problems with CD burning. The CD will burn, but when I go to play it in the car or on a portable player, I will hear a "tearing" sound at around tracks 4 or 5 of the disc. The sound is almost like something you would hear with an AM radio, it sounds like static that is tearing my speakers. The sound also seems to amplify based on how much bass is in the track (Ex: the "tear" happens on every bass kick for a House track). This has happened three times over the last four weeks, out of about 8 burns. This is getting really annoying and I would like to stop wasting my CD-Rs (and my time!) Any help would be appreciated.
Details:
The laptop I am using is a Compaq Presario 2209CL, Windows XP Pro SP2, 512MB RAM, 24x CD burner/DVD player
The CDs were burned using iTunes 8.1.1.10, at 16x and at 12x (I thought the slower speed would have helped, I never burn at a speed above 16x)
The brand of CD-Rs is Khypermedia, which I bought from Fry's. The brand has been good in the past...
Three out of the last eight burns have had this phenominon
The volume settings on my CD players are not overly loud. My car player is set to 17 (out of who knows what) and plays everything I put in it with crystal clear sound. My CD Walkman is set to 4.

1, could be a batch fault of media. rare but have seen it happen.
2, Check what driver your CD drive is using. Go to the manufacturers website (of the laptop so in your case HP) and get the latest driver.
3, Check that your drive does not need a firmware upgrade. I spent an entire year once struggling with a DVD burner on a laptop to find an obscure post on a ubergeeky tech forum where someone had a newer firmware revision that solved the problem.
4, Burn slower (i.e. 2x 4x or 8x speed max). Bad media or a badly calibrated/on the way out drive will always struggle at faster speeds.
