what is the deal with ultra records anyway?

i have yet to see an original artist get signed to this label. it seems like they make all of their money by licensing popular euro trance/dance music, and at the rate they're going, they'll have every single goddamn trance producer out there by 2010. i mean, they recently signed paul van dyk (was on mute), calvin harris, above & beyond - the list goes on and on.

i guess the only real consolation here is that they're an independent label, but i wouldn't be surprised to see them get acquired by warner a few years down the road

They're the American version of Ministry Of Sound. What else is there needed to know?

yeah, but ministry of sound doesn't buy up exclusive licensing rights to every single fucking dj out there, thus preventing americans from buying from all their labels

...do they?

so what exactly are you asking/looking for? they have a certain "angle" that is different than other labels.

and by the way, all of their "original" compilations suck ass. so they might as well stick to releasing every top jock's track here in the US.

They make CDs much more cheaper to buy. You are paying for a domestic release rather than an import.

but they don't release the singles in cd (or vinyl) format, only their shitty-ass compilations

Well no, that's not their business. They re-release mix comps and shit by crappy djs that other people like but aren't willing to pay $25 for.

but they still hold licensing rights and issue digital singles like the new above & beyond

it's not that it's particularly relevant to me right now but it will be if they strike a deal with any of my favorite record labels
