Yea, that was hilarious indeed That's one of the best things about the movie. The humor wasn't forced whatsoever. You really had to pay close attention to find the humor during the course of the film.

Coolest movie I have ever seen. It evolves from what seems to be a documentary into one of the craziest sci-fi stories ever made. Awesome special effects also.

Posted by BiG MiKE on Aug-14-2009 23:07:

^Yea! The documentary for me seemed a little bit forced in the first half of the film, but it eventually got better.

excellent film, 9.5/10 for me.

now without reading any reviews, here is my long shot theory.

if you noticed the scene towards the end where christopher is flying away and the camera pans to christopher's eyes, then pans to wikus' eyes, you can see a resemblance in their eyes that isn't seen on any of the other aliens. there is a pink, skin-like area around the yellow eyes and it is visible for about 5 seconds on christopher's eyes and longer around wikus' alien/left eye.

based on this, i think that christopher is also a human converted into alien. i really don't think they would've done the scene this way if they weren't trying to show that christopher was previously a human and converted into an alien by some unknown/similar reason. when he says "i need to save my people", he is most likely talking about saving the earth since i doubt aliens would be calling each other 'people'.

i believe that the fluid had multiple purposes, beyond reconverting wikus into a human and giving the small ship the power to fly away. i think it might have been able to convert christopher back into human. this raises the question of whether or not christopher was lying to wikus in order to save himself.

complications of my theory: why would christopher help the other alien develop the fluid in the first place? is his child one of the synthetic aliens or also converted? how does my semi-crazy theory relate to apartheid?

of course much of it will be revealed in the second film (i'm highly certain there will be one), but if anyone wishes to discuss this in either PM or in this thread, please do because i thought about this the entire drive home and while writing this post.

^Wow, never noticed the eye thing. This is definitely a movie to see twice.

What year was the present time? When I first saw a video camera taping the Mothership above, it said 1982. And they kept talking about twenty years later. It would result to 2002, but is that the present time period?

Space your spoilers ahead, just a bit

The prequel to this movie is called "Alive in Joberg" and can be found on YouTube. It's only about 7 min long and not very good but still interesting to watch if you're a hardcore fan of the movie.

You sure thats not the original idea that d9 was based on?

according to the d9 wiki, it's the original inspiration that led peter jackson to hire blomkamp for making the halo movie. when halo got canned, blomkamp was placed in charged of creating d9.

Not completely sure how I feel about this movie. Great cinematography, and great concept. Having it set in Johannesburg made the story even more fascinating. But it dragged in places, and borrowed blatantly from so many other movies. I'll have to stew on it a bit. But I'll recommend it to everyone too, so overall I'd say it's a thumbs up.

Womp womp

The only thing I wasn't too crazy about was the first half of the film. The random interviews didn't look real enough to me. Didn't make me want to believe that the things they were explaining and the situations at hand, were true and that it was really happening.

Posted by Stef on Aug-17-2009 04:05:

I heard a few of the interviews were people talking about the apartheid and were just spliced in to provoke some thought.

So I saw the movie last night. I thought the documentary part was a good way to evoke emotion about the charactors and for the whole population as a whole. Now with that being said, I didn't enjoy that part of the movie. Also, I think it is clear that Chris was a human, he is the only alien who we saw show any kind of emotion and planning. Also he was called different by the humans at multiple times. As far as the eye goes, I didn't notice that but it does make sense they did stay on his eye for a while. Ok enough of the review, I thought it was a really entertaining movie, some of the best special effects I have seen

just saw it. main character wikus was absolutley hysterical HAHA his humor was great. i enjoyed the movie i thought it was well worth it. ending was pretty farkin sad though.

Posted by thedevastation on Aug-19-2009 22:43:

crazy theory about how christopher could be a human. It makes a little sense the way you explained it. it was a great movie nonetheless. I hated how wikus was selfish and when he popped christopher in the face. But in the end he redeemed himself.

my brother brought up a good observation. The aliens looked like the elites from the halo series.

There's really one thing that bothers me about the whole thing.

**** SPOILERS AHEAD ****

When the mothership starts to move, appears NONE of the aliens (other than Christopher and the boy) even bother to take notice or for that matter care. If these aliens were stranded on Earth, wouldn't they want to show some sort of emotion towards the moving mothership (at the least to look UP at the sky).

The following is my interpretation of what took place.
Christopher and his friend (whom I'll call mate) were the pilots of the ship. Ship carried either prisoners or refugees. They sought out Earth as a habitable planet for these specific aliens and planned on just dropping them off and returning back to their world. After arriving, realized the world is already populated with intelligent beings and didn't know what to do. While awaiting instructions from the homeworld, people of Earth drilled the hole and moved these beings onto District 9. The weapons on board could explain the refugee scenario more than the prisoner scenario but could always put a spin on it regardless.

If it is the refugee scenario, the aliens not looking up or caring at the ship makes somewhat of a sense as they feel like they have landed at their new home and that's that.

Christopher states 3 years to Wikus, could be how long it takes for a round trip from his world to Earth. Meaning, it's probably going to mean more refugees coming on board on the return trip.

My $0.02.

People are saying Christopher is a human with good reason. Which means he was most likely from Earth. My question is, where did he learn such technology to pilot not only the small ship, but the mothership? No one on Earth is able to understand such technology. Even more so when the mothership appeared in 1982! There has to be someone else that taught him.

OP should edit thread title to clarify that the whole thread is spoilers.

Anyway, I thought it was an awesome movie. So different than other Summer alien movies.
