Diagnose Pro, because the doctors can't

so, i went to the ER today, and they sent me home cause they didn't know what was wrong with me. here's the skinny.

i've had a reddish, rough-to-the-touch rash all over my body, mainly on my legs, arms, back of neck, ears, and back...sometimes on chest.

yesterday i woke up and my face was swollen, my eyes so puffy i look asian. i took 2 benadryll yesterday and they didn't seem to have much of an effect.

today i woke up after 12 hours of sleep and my face was even more swollen, the swelling had spread to my throat and i was having some difficulty breathing.

i went to the ER and they tested me for strep throat (?) b/c my throat had a lil puss in it. strep test came back negative and they said it was probably a viral infection that i'd just have to let run its course.

the rash gets worse and prickly when it's hot... it's a lil itchy but not too bad. i've taken benadryll and excedrin for discomfort... my whole body feels like i'm wearing a weighted suit. i get a lil dizzy and feel very lethargic.

so

what

is

wrong

with

me

?!?!?!?!

allergic reaction? lol

it's always hard to identify what exactly is causing the reaction i would imagine because it's hard to remember exactly everything you came into contact with before symptoms started.

Posted by prolikewhoa on Aug-15-2009 19:26:

yeah i thought it was an allergic reaction too, but they didn't seem to think so? i haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary, but i did just move to the boston area like a month ago and there's definitely more like... plants and bugs and shit around here. i live in the freaking forest

Posted by Slylee on Aug-15-2009 19:32:

it's definitely an allergic reaction. i had the same thing happen to me in the bahamas when i was picking fruit off trees and eating them without washing them. had to fly back to florida and everything and go to the ER and they gave me a shot of steroids and i was better within hours. my eyes were swollen completely shut and had a complete body rash too.

they didn't give you any steroids and/or cortisone injections?

that type of thing can be caused by dosage problems with epilepsy meds, among others. in some of those cases, it can be lethal.

Post pics of said chest, then maybe I can help you.

no they didn't... that's what i was expecting though? i haven't eaten anything unusual...

the doc didn't do any kind of blood test or skin test or whatever... i have no idea why they didn't seem to think it wasn't an allergic reaction. i've never had one before but i imagine this is what it would be like. the rash is kinda on my face too... my face is just swollen and the skin feels really rough. yuck

I wasn't asking for pics of the face.
And I guess this is my chance to use another House image:

epilepsy meds have other applications. I also mentioned that those are just some of the ones that have that effect.

essentially, you get a whole-body rash that's also internal and eats away at your organs. it can happen if you start out at too high of a dose or if you stop then restart your dosage without building back into it for a few weeks (like those meds require you do initially).

It almost sounds like swine flu which i just got over except for the rash part.

I've had hives from rolling around in grass as a kid. Also from being stung by a bee.

The hives are close enough together that they could be called a "rash", and they started on my fingers and toes and spread from there.

Your face swelling sounds like what I had in Guatemala back when I was 12.

In all cases, they were allergic reactions, and after a week or so, they started to die down and run their course.

Sucks for the 2 weeks of pure itch you have to put up with though. But I would assume, what with my total lack of medical education and all, that you've experienced an allergic reaction from one of the new plants you've been exposed to.

Maybe you walked through a poison oak patch or something and didn't notice.

oh i just thought she mentioned she was an epileptic and i missed it. why would u bring that up as the cause if she isn't taking epileptic meds? the same meds for epilepsy are also used for what?

i've had the hives thing inside my body when i was having that allergic reaction. had little bumps all over my throat the roof of my mouth and on my tongue. not sure if that's what you're talking about.

I don't know what she's on, if anything. just mentioning it, because it's possible. they're used for a few different mood disorders. I don't know how you're supposed to fix it. if you're taking anything, just call the dr. who prescribed it.

one of my roommates had one prescribed & said it was the first thing the dr. said to not do (skip doses), because of that.

yea i know they are pretty heavy duty. my aunt suffers from grand mal (nocturnal) seizures and her daily meds are the reason why she is techinically "handicapped". they really make you out of it after a while.

I'm allergic to 9 zillion and 2 things and how you are describing yourself now is exactly how I am when I am experiencing an allergic reaction. I think you should go back to the doctor because when the swelling starts inside your throat it can progress (get worse).

So plus Juan to Jamie.

But my allergic reactions are always quickly diagnosed. You know they look at me, laugh at me, give me a shot, and send me on my way.

Seems odd that they didn't seem to think you're having an allergic reaction.

I suppose if you want to self medicate, you could buy that cortizone creme at a drug store and take some over the counter allergy medication.

Did you go walking in the wild of late? Almost sounds like a bad reaction to poison ivy.

Posted by Rose on Aug-15-2009 21:36:

Definitely sounds like an allergic reaction. Go to another doctor or hospital.

see, that's what I thought. because i just moved here (suburban/rural boston) from dallas. i take my dog for walks around the neighborhood, but i live in a very woodsy neighborhood. i walked her the other day where it was kinda wet outside and windy so i thought maybe i just had a reaction to something i breathed in the air. but yeah i mentioned that to the triage guy and he was like oh okay... but the doc never said anything.

the nurse who came to discharge me thought i had a sore throat bc of the strep test, and looked really confused. i took benadryl today can't tell if it's helping. i look asian, just a side note

Posted by tubularbills on Aug-16-2009 00:03:

doesn't match up with the rash party, but did they test for mono? cause all the swelling and puss in the throat sound like it. and since it's a virus you just "run it's course"

(or until you start puking in the doctor's office and they're like, "HEY! GET THIS MAN IN IV!")

Posted by Fledz on Aug-16-2009 01:11:

So they didn't even do a blood test? wtf, go to another hospital. That one is useless.

Posted by kadomony on Aug-16-2009 01:18:

it's lupus
