How many years / practice does it take (on average) to become that proficient with the piano?

I know this is a totally generic answer, but I'd say it varies greatly. I've been playing piano since I was 7 but I'm probably not quite that good. I mean, he was mostly just doing a lot of arpeggio runs and stuff...nothing TERRIBLY difficult, but he certainly did it quite well. More impressive is that he was able to knock out 7 or 8 trance tracks "just for the hell of it"... I'd have to practice that for a good while.

Well what I thought was very nice was how well he improvised. I heard a ton of added notes in the performance that were not in the originals and they sounded great. It seems having that ability would be absolutely stunning when it comes to writing melodies. If you could sit there and play harmonic pieces for an hour and then go back and listen I bet you'd find some amazing melodies.

hoooly shit I'm going to need this guy to write out some sheets for that stuff. I saw Flaming June, then children and Saltwater and Out of The Blue and I think I almost died.

This is Torley Wong, he's an INCREDIBLE piano player. He has autism/aspergers, I don't know how much that contributes to his playing, nor do I know how long he's been playing. Though I do know that all he did to play that arrangement was spend maybe a few minutes learning each melody, virtually all of the transitions and the harmonic stuff was improvised.

Another amazing thing was how spot-on he was... everything seemed so improvised, and yet so precise.

he is playing standard chord progressions you would learn in a 2 year harmony course with the familiar melody on top. 2 more years to get a good enough grip on technique to do the arpeggiations.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is just jamming to a melody that pops up in his head as that would be fairly easy for most competent pianists. The harmonies are as basic as they come , there are no modulations and the same can be said for the melody.

Well one of his musical aliases was Aspergian, I know for a fact that he has asperger's. I just meant I don't know how much that contributes to his piano playing.

Considering that this is a medley of songs in different keys with seamless, improvised transitions, attacking it because it's harmonically simple is a pretty bold statement. Especially considering that trance has never been renowned for its harmonic variation.

I watching his tutorials now on how to play romantic piano and its really sinking in. Talented guy
