Network help

I'm hoping that some of you networking junkies might be able to help me

Here's the background info:

I have two computers connected to eachother directly with a cat-5 crossover cable, no hub. One computer has two network cards, one to connect to my DSL modem, the other to connect to my second PC. My second PC has a single NIC and is configured to use the first PC's internet access. Both computers are running Windows XP.

Surfing and file transfer are generally not a problem on PC #2, though only certain websites will not load up at all. Another problem is that I can't seem to be able to receive any email on my second PC. Another strange problem is that when I try and play some MP3s stored on PC #1 with Winamp on PC #2, it won't play any of them, as if the files don't exist. It's the newest version of Winamp that I am using. ICQ and MSN seem to work problem-free.


Anyone know what's going on?

Are the mp3's shared on both networks? as in... My network places...do you have those files listed under there where they are shared between both?

i've had this problem too. Everything worked, except I couldn't load asianavenue.com on the second computer. My computers are hooked up exactly like yours, except I'm running win2k instead of winXP. My problem had to do with the PPPoE protocol DSL uses and MTU settings. My friend gave me this link, and it solved my problems, it doesn't have a solution for WinXP, but it can be a start for you to search around the net, looking for the same topic:

I assume you are running a single IP. You could go out and get yourself two IPs and run each computer individually, or you could go out and gateway and run NAT. Which personally I don't prefer. Running a crossover IMO is just plain ghetto.

You could also go out and get a two port router. If your ISP provides more than 1 static/usable IP address, then sell that second NIC and get yourself a simple hub. All you'll ned after that is a simple cat-5 and a second IP. To run from the HUB to PC#2 and PC#1 (which apparently u already have a cable).

Running an "uplink" from a second NIC on the same computer is likely and possibly able to cause problems with configuration. With a simple HUB, or even a gateway, the distribution is equal, and no conflicts can occur (as long as the configuration is set right). Just be sure the problems in browsing and what not have nothing to do with PC#2s configuration.

You may also wish to look into USB sharing. Not only files but share the internet as well. Also u can check out DCC, through serial, though I recommend parallel. Serial configuration with windows networking can actually sometimes be a real pain in the ass.

Although when it comes down to it, I believe the problems are in PC#2s configuration, and you shouldn't have to get any of the above. As far as running mp3s from another comp, you're better off with DCC IMO via a parallel connection.

spend $15 - $20 and buy a hub. . .it will save you a lot of trouble in the future. You wont have to worry about reconfiguring your jury-rigged network every time you install new software.

i believe that most ISP's who provide a dedicated broadband service give a IP stack so you shouldnt have a problem running a hub. my recommendation is to pop a hub in there and run the computer independantly.

Well, I know most ISPs now days are becoming VERY stingy with IPs. Ask your ISP how many you have reserved/avialable with your account, and work from there.

The problem is that I'm stuck with the Cat-5 crossover cable that I have... it's been wired through my entire house, so I have to work with it somehow.

I'm pretty sure it has to do with PPPoE and MTU, if some websites load up, while others don't. you're using bell sympatico right? i had the exact same problem.

Nah its not a problem. You can still use that cable. I am assuming both comps are in different rooms? Anyway, since its already a cat-5 cable, it shouldn't be a problem. Just connect the router to the HUB, then run the a cat 5 cable from the HUB direct to PC#1. Then with the crossover cable, run that from the HUB to PC#2. If you can't replace the cable with a "straight through" cable, you're just gonna need to do some re-wiring at the end and get a connector.......There are plenty of diagrams etc. on the net that can help you to convert it back to a straight through cable.
