-- I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in

I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in.
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within.
I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high...
I tore my mind on a jagged sky.
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in.
I watched myself crawlin' out as I was a-crawlin' in.
I got up so tight I couldn't unwind...
I saw so much I broke my mind.
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign.
I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind.
Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare...
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere.
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

I said I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

Kenny Rogers and the First Edition - Just Dropped In

Classic.

What is this song really about? The brown paper bag part suggest alcohol to me, but 'tearing your mind on a jagged sky' suggests something else.

Also, 8 miles? Any significance to the number 8?

Metrosexuals use Axe? I thought they were supposed to be up on fashion and use fancier stuff than that.

Song meanings are always up for debate, but I believe the song is about a man who wakes up from an alcohol binge to find himself in the throes of an LSD flashback.

I rolled a 1. What happens now?

That's exactly where I'd place it as well, just by the lyrics. Wasn't sure if maybe there was an actual story to it or something along those lines.

The song was written by Mickey Newbury, who was part of the outlaw country movement that paralleled the other counter-culture movements of late 1960's America. Wiki suggests this song is anti-LSD and some members of this "clique" were notoriously against the use of strong perception-altering drugs like acid, but I just don't see the 'ware the drug' message in this song. Wiki did learn me that Adam Corolla is a big fan, which I suppose is notable.

I can't find any info related to the song being based in truth or on any story. It doesn't seem particularly out of bounds though...
