Cubase 5 Issues
Who is using Cubase 5 without any headaches? I just noticed Steinberg released a 5.1 patch (not to be confused with the previous 5.01 release). I was hoping they had addressed the CPU Overload issue which has basically rendered the program almost useless for me. All I'm reading on the Steinberg forums is how buggy and shitty the 5.1 update is and how so many standing issues are still unresolved. Part of me is starting to regret upgrading to Cubase 5 and I'm just wondering how all of you other Cubase 5 users are feeling. Thanks guys...
i just reinstalled everything two weeks ago... brand new copy of xp sp3 and cubase 5.01... pristine as can be and it works fine now... before I was having trouble with cpu overloading as well.
my pc is never hooked up to the internet and is only used for music production. As a result it lasted me maybe a year of decent operation with cubase before getting buggy on me.
I've had some serious problems with Cubase 5 and have pretty much given up on it. My biggest problems are the real-time export issue, the new-and-improved-auto-file-corrupting feature (it destroyed two of my projects), and the constant crashing that Cubase has become so well known for.
Regardless, the 5.1 update is hardly a "0.X" update unless you own one of the hardware controllers. Otherwise, it's just a lame "0.0X" update attempt at fixing some very minor bugs, while ignoring the big obvious ones. Lame.
my cubase keeps crashing for no reason all the time...
plus when i try to export i get cpu overload and im running a quad core with 8gig ram so im not lacking any power... and sometimes my virus ti vst fucks up in it and i lose my preset cause i have to re insert it..
never had any of these issues with ableton
I'm currently in the process of buying C5. This thread doesn't exactly make me feel better

I haven't had that happen yet thankfully. 2 of your projects were destroyed? My audio PC has never once touched the internet. Also the same system never had an issue when using SX3 so I think it really all boils down to the shitness of Cubase 5. |

I think its pretty insane the number of issues and factors that go into ensuring a stable system for a given DAW... my setup the way it is (no pc games, no internet, no suspect software), working in Ableton 7 was impossible... constantly crashing, slow running.
Cubase 5 seems more stable to me, and I deal with the occasional crash every other day but I still get a good hour of work in. A simple reintialization of the project works fine. You really just have to make sure your PC is babied.

Actually, that's a little less than I was experiencing, but an app that crashes every other day (or more in my case and usually just out of the blue and apparently not associated with any plugins or system issues) does not come close to meeting my definition of "stable."
Cubase 5 has worked perfectly fine for me even though I'm very aware that there are other people out there that are having major issues. My system has been working like a dream ever since I rebuilt it fully converted my studio PC to all legit software. Legal software and a reinstall of Windows works wonders!

Project5 has crashed on me maybe a dozen or so times in 3 years. |
Using Cubase 5 with no problems what so ever.
Seems to be system dependant which is shit in itself, but i have to say i havent really had any problems with Cubase since i went totally 100% legit software a few years back.

I'm running C5 on a brand new PC built by Synergy, a music production PC product in which I have I7 chips. I'm using Steinbergs MRX firewire interface.
The main problem I have is a 15 minute period where I get a stuttering audio drop out, once every session - just once, about 4o minutes in, then I leave it for 15 mins and hey presto it fixes without restart or anything.
I've read tons of stuff on cubase.net, but so far no luck.
BTW - this stuttering period happens even if I then switch cubase off and say play a CD / DVD on the machine - so clearly THE STEINBERY INTERFACE / PC RELATIONSHIP WITH THE INTERFACE has a role here.
It's IMO something to do with buffering and heat. People say the usualy 'up your buffer' which of course is the first thing I ever tried, but clearly that is not going to be it because if it was then the drop out 15 minute period would happen more than once in a session, no this is something wierd.
Yes I've gone into BIOS and disabled everything (bar 1 important thing) - no joy.
Anyone who fixes this gets massive net sex from me - if they want it!
Dear Steinberg...
...fix your 64bit VST Bridge
The only reason I upgraded to Cubase 5 was for 64bit support (yes I know Cubase 4 x64 exists, but it would not install on my Windows 7 x64 computer).
I find that the regular x86 version Cubase 5 functions much more reliably and all my plug-ins load.
It is nice to roll with 64bit, but Audio Land (Ableton, Sonar, Reason, ProTools) just doesn't seem ready for 64bit.
So far though, Cubase 5 really rocks the socks..... just moar 64bit support! >_< !
I want to load 40 instances of some reverb plug-in, and put my Intel i7 and 12gb of DDR3 through it's paces!!!!

I would have to say that ever since upgrading to C5 I've had random issues most of which have been resolved by sifting through the manual and getting some suggestions from the forums. At the very least it has been running much smoother than SX2.
With that in mind, I'm curious if any of the C5 users here who have Waves plugs have tried automating them via the automation tracks. That's pretty much the only issue I'm having right now...I used to be able to automate fine in SX2 but for some reason C5 does not recognize any of the automation parameters for many of the Waves plugs in the automation track; for each parameter it just says "unknown" and the plug doesn't respond to any movements when the "write" button is enabled. Anyone come across this and/or know how to fix it?
