Dunno Learning Math Online, basic to whatever...

OK. It is finally starting to hurt me in what I want to do and its time to get it figured out for myself.

I suck at math. Like, really, really, REALLY, suck at it. I never payed attention in high school, I failed math every single semester I took. Basic Algebra, Geometry for 2 years, and then I some how convinced my counselor in senior year that I didn't need to take a math class...

I can pick things up here and there, but basically I have a middle school level knowledge of math, and even then I have forgotten most of that since I rarely used it. It sucks cause when I do get something I'm like "ahah thats sweet, but I have no idea what the fuck it matters to anything else!?"

So does anyone have any online resources for self-teaching math? I need like basic shit. I barely remember how to calculate the side of a triangle from its two know sides and I am sitting here trying to figure out how to calculate ballistics and its just a non-starter!

There are plenty of pre-algebra books on Ebay and elsewhere. Go through one of those, and once you get through it, get Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 for Dummies.

The "For Dummies" books are really great ways to learn from my experience..easdy to read and plenty of good info. They aren't really for dummies, since dummies wouldn't bother learning would they?

I feel you I'm in the same boat as you.

I'm starting school in the spring for electronic engineering. Fuck me!

Instead I'm learning how to speak Dutch through Rosetta Stone lol it's fun though.

Really, Nou? You're a computer programmer/network admin/computer guy and you suck at math? What made you so bad at it? Your brain should work in a logical enough manner to at least pick up some of it...

Thanks for the replies so far. I am planning to go back to school winter quarter and I would really like to test into a higher math class than I did the last time I applied to school... I think I was qualified for Math 80!

My English score was like 200+ or something, whatever the max was. English is rather pointless though in most endeavors...

Uh oh, you'd better get on top of your shit. Electrical Engineers have to be brilliant at math, you don't want to take Networks 2 or any of the Magnetics courses or any basic circuits course without being badass at Calculus and Differential Equations. Good luck...

Yea, its not so much that I can't grasp it, I am very logical. I was just a shit student and to be honest and not use this as my only excuse, most of my teachers sucked in high school.

One was cool, but he wasn't strict enough and I ended up being a jerk off in that class.

My sophomore year they put me in Integrated Math which if anyone has ever been in a district that tried that out, you know how much fucking fail it is. They taught you shit by basically one giant story problem AND they tried to mix in English and History with it too. It was a Titanic boatload of fail!

I think most of it is the symbols. If I looked at the math like pragmatically laid out I get a better understanding of it.

I may just be lazy in high school when i actually tried i did good at math.

I took electronics all four years in high school Learned a lot of the calculations bull shit but it didn't stick.

I killed the ASVAB (Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) my senior year my electrical was off the chart i could do any electronic job in the Marine Corps and clepped (sp? CLEP...) out of most of the schooling for the job i got.

So i hope it all will be a refresher. I forgot a lot in these 5 years.

If you're like me then I wouldn't do anything online and take math classes in college or something. At least there you have someone to help you out. The only people I know that took/take math courses online are people who are good at math to begin with. But you're going to get stuck a lot and probably need help/need to ask a lot of questions.

Ok Nou, describe the smell & taste of different kinds of pussy and the way it feels when your shaft is all wet from that pussy juice. Common virgin, I'm putting u on the spot.

you and boris really need to form a pedo alliance

Anyways, I don't have much sympathy for people who are smart, but terrible at math. If you can understand simple logic, and basic algebra rules, you can do calculus. I took Calc 1-3, Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics, and Linear Algebra, and got a C in every single one except discrete and linear, I got a C+ in those Just study, do your homework, make sure it's right, then try your best on the tests.

I'm not a pedo tho... I really am not sure where this idea came from, but it is amusing.

Yea, I know, it feels like I built a house on no foundation...

Honestly, where have I ever claimed one thing or the other? I am not sure what this vindictive attitude towards me is the result of...

Posted by Moongoose on Aug-28-2009 02:47:

Well, when i want to look up something on maths i use wikipedia. Yes, seriously. No problems to solve there for practice of course, but for a quick lookup its quite sufficient. For instance, i have this bookmarked and i return to it every once in a while when i need to look up something that i really should remember but for some unexplainable reason (beer) i cant.

A little creepy too.

Skez, may I point you to http://www.asstr.org/

I am sure you can get your fix of vivid descriptions of sexual congress there.

I always thought you would be the kind of guy who would study math on your own since you seemed to be a logic-loving type. You are obviously very intelligent and could grasp math if you have the will to power through some textbooks.

Thats the thing, it probably is easy for me. I just never committed to it. When I was supposed to be learning math I was reading books on atomicity in random access databases and shit... There is really very little math in a lot of computer programming...

*edit*

The same thing goes for chemistry. I was so psyched to take it junior year, but my teacher was horrible. She never had a lesson plan and it was just a really bad class. I was so disappointed. By the end of the year I was sleeping through her class.

Posted by Rose on Aug-28-2009 02:55:

I had a 7am math class today and had to take a quiz. fml.

Posted by Nrg2Nfinit on Aug-28-2009 02:55:

do like me ask your questions on TA. You will get ridiculed for a bit but eventualy they will get answered

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Aug-28-2009 02:56:

Yeah, you can get a lot of practical stuff done in programming without knowing much of math. But the two subjects use a very similar facility with symbolic language, and I think that people who excel at one are likely to be good at the other, if they have the will to learn it.

Posted by Moongoose on Aug-28-2009 03:01:

Most of the math i learned at uni was on my own...not that the teachers were useless (only one of them was that was, staring into a blank wall was immensely more interesting than listening to her lectures), but most of the math lessons were held at 7am (and those with the boring teacher on mondays which made it even worse!) so it was either go to math class or walk 50 metres farther and have a nice cup of coffee in a bar. Most of the time the choice that was made was to walk a few extra seconds and enjoy coffee for the next hour and a half while the rest were tortured with some boring math proofs
