trance and genres....annoyances...

I think we can all agree that dividing music into weird, obscure genres gets annoying.

But does anyone else find it annoying when people oversimplify things and try to force them into a genre to which they don't belong?

Like one thing I recently realized is how many people (over here at least) listen to trance music but think there are only 2 kinds of trance - epic and psytrance. Which comes down to most of them labelling everything that's trance but not psytrance or goa as "epic."

The other day I was at this bar kinda place which is run by a psytrance DJ, but he plays all kinds of music there. And he was DJing some psytrance and decided to throw in a hard trance song. At which point some dude there had this reaction like "lol wtf ur playing epic d00d!"

Sadly, this is nowhere near the first time I've encountered that kind of thing, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

One thing that was kinda funny the other week, there was a special event at a club which usually plays psytrance on one of its floors, instead of psytrance they were having an event for hard techno, tech-dance, and hard trance kinda stuff and a bunch of the customers were like "whoa, this is some good psytrance today!"

Now, I don't expect people to know all the different trance genres, but it's annoying when people think there are only like 2 styles.

I guess it's not as bad as people who think all EDM="techno," but still...

Stop whining and be happy with what you got.

This is a stupid thread, that I thought might actually be about a legitimate topic.

Does it matter whether a person mislabels a subgenre of music they don't like? They don't like it.

and those are just the two furthest apart styles. With mostly everything from prog to hard trance being much closer to euro/epic trance so that's what psy heads call it. It doesn't matter, at the end of the day if they don't like it they don't.

I hate all the epic trance heads that think classic trance is 1998 area or that hard trance with 303s is acid trance much more than you hate this.

The press on several occasions put ' The new trance sensation ,, Basshunter!!'' but then again what do you expect.

To be fair, the two most prolific trance scenes are the epic trance scene of Anjuna/Armada/Black Hole/Lost Language/blah blah and the psytrance scene. The other scenes are pretty tiny compared to a decade ago.

Yes, because anyone who doesn't listen/like a particular subgenre of music that you are knowledgable on must still correctly label the genre just in case you're around and happen to get irritated.

Those malevolent bastards.

You can't really blame them especially considering that the definition of sub-genres is as dynamic as the sub-genres themselves.

Trance is a big genre I and many others are still exploring, it has plenty of genres and is also interconnected with other forms of electronica. It shouldn't be a surprise to you.
