Earthshine: The new model for Progressive Trance?
I had a realization the other day while I was listening to this album. I know an artist that primarily writes psychedelic downtempo/ambient is an unlikely cantidate to set the standard for progressive trance, but I think he did with this album.
Every track has all the programming qualities of progressive house and trance that made the genres good. Long droning builds, fades and drops, subtle but steady progression and different motifs through each track. Meaningful and endearing melodies, without having to be cheesy. Does this mean that melodies should now revolve around more atmospheric soundscapes? I do not believe so, but it's hard to argue with the recipe that Magnus has concocted.
(Note because of some of the more galloping bass lines some would consider a couple of the tracks Psy-trance)
Discuss.
i love this album
so many different sounds and styles in the one place, deep lush prog, pumping trance, sprinklings of psy, it's brilliant!
awesome stuff its defo a good sign of leading productions and cant wait to here more
Yes, Solar Fields made some excellent trance with Earthshine.

No. I guess that was kind of an odd turn of phrase.
"Summer" was probably my favorite trance track of 2007.
Summer is one of those tracks the first time you hear it the immediate thought is 'damn this is good'.
i brought this album the other day and it kicks ass very similar to solar fields minus the 4/4 kick of course great stuff
Owien, that is unrelated to this thread, but definitely thank you for the heads up on that one. I'm going to be getting that album.

Who cares whether it's psy or no? Still good trance either way.

One of the best trance albums ever in my opinion, honestly. The tracks are all different and there is so much artistry and creativity in them. A lot of great ideas, meticulous programming, flawless production and the melodies, atmospheres, everything... it's music that speaks to me. Trance is seldom as interesting as on EarthShine.
More recently he did an amazing job together with Aes Dana on the new H.U.V.A. Network album "Ephemeris". Check it out.

Very talented producer and that Earthshine album is indeed awesome. Also check out Vibrasphere - Baltic Resonance (Vibrasphere remix). He should do more trance oriented stuff |

I thought you meant vibrasphere when you said he.
He meant Baltic Resonance (Solar Fields Remix).
It was a couple of months after I joined tranceaddict that there was a thread recommending this album. At the time I was fairly skeptical about all the people praising it, but I bought it from beatport and took it away on a three week beach holiday to Thailand a couple of weeks later.
Again, when I heard those first jingly bells at the start of Summer, I knew I was in for something special, and I've pretty much been listening to the album every couple of weeks since. It is an incredible piece of work.
Unfortunately, despite this album being so good, no one else, as fair as I am aware, has tried to emulate/replicate this type of trance sounds.

Id say this is more what really is progressive trance, acts like Vibrasphere etc. is also considered progressive trance.. unfortunately everything that isnt uplifting straight to the point trance is also considered progressive trance these days.
My favorite track from that album was February, the most psychedelic and the fastest out of the album. That bassline just makes me groove until it ends. All the tracks however are very nice.
And yeah, Domesticated recommended some of the other artists that produce similar stuff, check them out.

| Originally posted by Domesticated I understand what you're saying, but replication of sounds is why trance has ended up in such an awful state now and has become so devoid of creativity. |

| Originally posted by Trancefxs I wrote replication, in the sense of taking this type of sound and moving it forward, not copy pasting obviously. As for your list of artist, only Whirloop has published an album with similar sounds after the release of "Earthshine". |
